Witter v Hatton

Junior Witter has revealed that his representatives are currently in talks with Ricky Hatton’s team over what the WBC light-welterweight champion believes would be “a real battle of Britain”.

Hatton now looks poised to step back down to 140lbs after last weekend’s knockout defeat by welterweight king Floyd Mayweather.

‘The Hitman’ has plenty of options available to him, with IBF titleholder Paulie Malignaggi already expressing an interest in a possible bout at Madison Square Garden next year.

However, Witter, who has long sought a fight with Hatton, believes that the Mancunian should challenge him for his WBC strap.

"It would be an ideal fight against him because I am the best light-welterweight in the world and he wants to come and take the crown from me,” the 33-year-old Bradford native told the Manchester Evening News.

"My people are speaking to him. This is the obvious next fight for Ricky. A real fight, battle of Britain.

"The fans want to see it and I don't care whether it's held in the City of Manchester Stadium or wherever, even London."

"I don't think what happened in Vegas [against Mayweather] makes any difference.

"He's going to want to fight me more than Mayweather. He hates me and I don't mind. When I box, I box the best and he [Hatton] is one of the best in the world."

That would be a great fight. Id fancy Witter myself, another beaten for the over rated Hatton in view ;).

Hatton is not over rated, thats stupid(he lost to a living legend) Hatton would smash Witter up, it might be a good fight but it would be Hattons title come the end..

How can you say Hatton is "Overrated"...Explaine.

    He lost to Mayweather? Yeah?...

Mayweather is one of the best fighters ever to pull on a pair of gloves. Full props to Hatton for stepping up to the challenge however we did see a gulp in class. To say witter is in the same league as Hatton is very silly.

This is a quick payday for Hatton and another win on his record. Will he take it? I believe he will reluctantly. He probably feels he has to, to prove himself again. But personally i feel he has bigger fish to fry!

Hatton over rated? Please explain how you came to that conclusion.

Hatton would beat Witter, it would be a good fight but Hatton would dominate.

I really hope Hatton gets back to training real soon and drop to his correct weight and fights anyone at it. He was OVERRATED at 147lbs. At 140 I still believe my OLD Hatton is a force
to be reckoned with. I just hope the dismal loss to PBF doesn't dent his confidence too much

lol - one loss to mayweather and people think hatton is over-rated.

Witter isn't in Hatton's class. Hatton would beat him, all day - every day.

I like hatton but people can legitimately claim that he is overrated because his record is very padded.
Some people were also claiming that hatton/mayweather was close to 50-50 fight so he was overrated there.

If any fighter is over-rated then it's Junior Witter!

IMO Hatton could beat any of the champions at Light Welter. His toughest fight could be against rugged Colombian Ricardo Torres (WBO champ) but I think fighters like Witter (WBC), Gavin Rees (WBA) & Paulie Malignaggi (IBF) wouldn't trouble Hatton too much.

god i think people are forgetting how hard witter hits he wouldn't be blown away i think hatton style is what witter needs and i think he's bigger on puncher than mayweather hasn't got he speed but still very eluvise i think hatton a great fighter and don't think he's overrated at all bu i have always felt he would be beaten by witter saying that witter would only win by KO but i'm sure ricky would walk on to a big one.

Hatton was all mouth during the week before the fight and even after the fight he was still making excuses. Billy Graham his trainer basically said after the fight he should never have fought at that weight. Hatton has had 43 fights before and if you ask me, a lot of those where against people who near the end of there career and hasbeens. I knew from day one mayweather would that fight and i also predicted a TKO in the 7th round, but still knocked out. Hatton is only a brawler and has no style. Through the ten rounds i dont remember him hurting mayweather or ever catching him. mayweather through more punches and lananded more, the class was there to be seeing and also not ;).

The Kostya Tszyu v Hatton fight was another joke, Kostya Tszyu hadnt had a fight in 22months and was at the end of his career. I remember Hatton was holding on and on through each round, which is why mayweather camp had warned the referee before the fight. The Referee had no influnce in the fight, he did spoil the first two rounds, but there was only going to be one winner, how hatton thought he had a chance all week, he talked some Sh*te. mayweather talked the talked and walked the walked.

If Oscar de la hoya and Hatton fight in may of 2008, only going to be one winner there De La Hoya easy, i predict another TKO or a stopage and again he is at the end of his career...

I'm entilted to my opinion and i gave it above, Witter to win if and when they fight. Hatton's career is over. The upside he has made at least £20million from sales.

he fought sharmba mitchell late 2004 and fought hatton in the summer of 2005, before that fight with mitchell he had 22 months off.
just out of interest does anyone know why this was: injury etc?

It wasn't just his loss, it was the way he lost.
He was thoroughly whupped by Floyd and
Floyd though a great fighter still struggled to
beat Castillo and Judah. Both are hardly
    legends. I think
    people simply expected more from
    Hatton and he didn't deliver.
He was too small for the weight
and the overrating was because people didn't
    realise this...

Hatton was all mouth during the week

Is your name Joe Cortez ?

As I was shouting at the TV during the fight "Ricky is the WHITE fella".

That has to go down as one of the dumbest quotes about this or any other fight this forum has seen.

I watched all the interviews with hatton before the fiight. All the build up on skysports and Hatton was talking rubbish through the week. Mayweather beat him and for Hatton to say he thought he did alright, he was rubbish.

have to agree with barlow here,i like hatton but he did talk some bull. And if maywaether did the throat cutting gesture like ricky did what would the reaction here have been?
Hatton tried to live with the best but failed, there is no shame in that.He would beat witter but struggle against DLH.

Looks like Hitter v Hitman wont be happening anytime soon:mad:
    http://www.secondsout.com/UK/news.cfm?ccs=228&cs=23488

basically it says Hatton wont fight Witter as long as he keeps insulting him in public, and witter is not big enough a name for HBO.
Hatton will fight an as of yet unanmed opponent in England and then most likely back to the states for a fight with Mallignaggi in MSG.

who could be a better candidate for a fight in England at 140? Enzo Calzaghe said a fight with Rees isn't on the cards yet

I bet Hatton is eager to fight Rees as he feels it will be an easy comeback fight for him. I think he needs such a bout to get his confidence back. A fight between Hatton and Rees is the last thing Enzo Calzaghe wants for his new champion.

According to the Star yesterday, Brian Peters is trying to get Hatton to fight in Ireland next year.
That would be great, but can you see it happening?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,099 ✭✭✭RealJohn

The only arguement against Hatton/Witter now is that Hatton's stock has been damaged by the loss. I don't think it's been damaged enough though to justify giving Hatton some stiff to beat up before he fights Witter. Hatton/Witter will sell out anywhere they decide to hold it on this side of the Atlantic.

Heard that alright, cant really see this happening unless he has 3 fights this year.
    would be amazing though!

also i dont think Hattons stock has been damaged at all, considering the opponent its probably higher than if he fought and beat another urango/maussa
