Repeat subscriptions, or getting cheap prescriptions

What is the story with repeat subscriptions? how long can they go on for, or stay valid?

I used to get tonsilitis a lot. Last time I was sick I had to struggle down to the doctor sick as a dog, only to go in.
    "what is wrong with you"
    tonsilitis
    "What do you usually take."
a course of amoxil Xmg Xperday
    "ok heres the prescription"

So had to stuggle down there, and hand over €40 to diagnose and prescribe myself.

I now have a skin complaint flare up, 15-20 years since last time. I know exactly what will cure it. Can I just go to a chemist with the empty cream bottle and get another? it is prescription cream for dermatitis.

If I do have to pay another €40 to diagnose myself again can I get a recurring prescription, that could be still valid in say 20 years?

A prescription is only valid for 6 months after it is written.
