How are you guys going to watch this?
    I need ideas haha.

I actually watched Rio Heroes last night, so I need something to wash away the memory.

I'm looking to be prepared for Yarennoka too, that whole card should be good. Dying to see Aoki - Calvancante, then Gilbert, Mach, Hellboy, Fedor vs. Godzilla. Great card.

I just watched Jens Pulver vs Cub Swanson, Paulo Filho vs Chael Sonnen and Urijah Faber vs Jeff Curran
Swanson came out and tried to takedown Pulver but Pulver got a very tight choke and tapped him within a minute

Filho got slaughtered for a full two rounds, he looked terrible. Sonnen had some really good takedown defence. But right at the end of the second round Sonnen got caught in an armbar and the ref ended the fight even though Sonnen didn't tap. I didn't like it, I think Sonnen would have been good to go if the ref had just waited for the bell to go for the end of the round. Filho would have been in more trouble for the third round then. A rematch has to happen sometime

Faber was just great. He got into some trouble in the first round by getting caught with Curran on his back, but he defended it so well. Curran couldn't even get his arm around Faber's neck for a choke. When Faber escaped he had some real impressive stand up, lightning fast short elbows from clinch. There were some strange positions they ended up in, in the second round Faber had Curran's head, left arm and left leg in his guard. Faber also hit a really cool knee to the face when Curran was holding onto his other leg standing up. It ended shortly after that with Faber getting a guillotine choke in a slightly unorthodox position. Faber is so fast, him vs Clay Guida is now a dream match of mine!

This event is the first wec event I've seen, and its the first time I've seen Urijah Faber fight. Jesus he is fast.
His elbows from the clinch were unbelievable, espcially considering he pulled his arms out from curran's over hooks. fozzy I'm with you: faber v Guida(my fav fighter at the moment, and not just cause of the hair:D)

Spoiler about the Pulver - Swanson fight:
Jens made Cub look like ****, that was unbelievable. That take down was amazing and the choke was fantastic.
    Edit:
I just watched it again, and the takedown didn't do anything haha, but it was still cool.

    Re: Filho match
I thought that decision was grand, its not up to the fighter to stop the fight

Sonnen says that he shouted "no" to the ref when he asked him if he wanted to stop, and that the ref apologised to him afterwards. Five seconds left in the round, I don't know if he'd have held on but it seems as though he wanted to. Filho is talking about moving to light-heavyweight now, he's blaming his poor performance on the amount of weight he cut for the fight

The WEC is having great events, its better than the UFC in terms of action and fights. Filho was about to spoiler: snap his arm so it was the right decision IMO .

    Finish to the Filho fight:

I think I agree with what they think happened. Although, considering
it says he tapped maybe my judgement's been clouded haha
    .

Filho moving to 205 opens the door for him to go the ufc...maybe?

If he goes to the UFC he has to fight Anderson Silva..The top 2 middle weigts in the world gong to war would be some match up!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,594 ✭✭✭Fozzy

Filho's said that the reason that he's in WEC is because himself and Anderson don't want to fight each other. Although I read something last week that said that Filho now says that if the UFC want to match them up then there's nothing either of them can do about it. There's no way the UFC would just throw him in there against Anderson straight away though

I never even thought of him going to the UFC as a middleweight because of him and Anderson not wanting to fight, but I'd love to see it.

Wow, according to wiki he's only 5'8".

based on his wec performances there is no reason to expect him to run through dean lister, rich franklin, jushin okami and the other middle weights. it should be a while before he deserves a title shot and i'm sure they'll cross that bridge when they come to it.

If Anderson beats Hendo in March they're going to be struggling for opponents. WEC Champ v UFC Champ is easy to sell. Probably easier to sell to American fans than Pride Champ v UFC Champ...
