Not a very nice chap but an important talent
Musician Ike Turner Dies at 76

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Ike Turner, whose role as one of rock's critical architects was overshadowed by his ogrelike image as the man who brutally abused former wife and icon Tina Turner, died Wednesday at his home in suburban San Diego. He was 76.

"He did pass away this morning" at his home in San Marcos, in northern San Diego County, said Scott M. Hanover of Thrill Entertainment Group, which managed Turner's musical career.

There was no immediate word on the cause of death.

    Mike.

Hugh talent and a major figure in rock, soul, r&b. Real success in his last few years, grammy nomination in 2001, collaboration with Gorillaz, grammy win this year and he was to record an album with the Black Keys which would have been cool. RIP

Aye but heaven is one rockin' joint by now. James Brown be making sure of that.

Ike was a controversial figure, but he was definately onto something back in the day. I still listen to the Ike & Tina stuff and its pure class.

Ike was a contorlf freak and was paronoid about Tina leaving cuz she was the one with the voice ,like the goose with the golden egg ,so by controling her he claimed her sucess was all down to him ,He treated her badly and it backfired on him .She became her own womon

To be fair, Tina didn't write most of the stuff she did- Ike wrote everything he did (and for her when they were working together). I think his reputation has alot to do with the kind of bad thing he did rather than the fact that he did a bad thing- there is probably nothing more uncool than hitting a woman.

But look at it this way, Pete Townsend (Guitarist from the Who) got caught with chil-porn on his computer- and yet last year he stood on the main stage of Glastonbury and was treated like a god. Eric Clapton sympathised with fascist nutcase Enoch Powell, and he still gets treated like a messiah.

So why does Ike get such a hard time?

Mike Tyson, Micheal Jackson, Chuck Berry and Ike Turner all have something in common; they're all Black Americans who became famous and very rich because of their phenomenal talents- this was all the excuse American law enforcement agencies needed to go after them and destroy their careers, whether they did wrong or not.

What Ike did was wrong- but for his unquestionable musical talent to be denied because he was a bit, well, crazy is also very wrong.

And Besides-on a purely musical viewpoint- other than her early work with Ike- what the f**k has Tina Turner ever done?

A quote from ike a few years ago sums the guy up

'' Hey man all that stuff about me beating tina up is all lies ,sure i punched her a few times but i never beat her up ''

    Classic :)
