New pickups - help

Here's the deal - A guitarist friend of mine left a guitar in my house a couple years ago and never took it back. The other day I asked him and he said I could keep it. It's a Yamaha (edit- this one) but it's got no pickups.

I'm thinking of taking up guitar properly, in addition to my bass playing, so I think I'll get some pickups. Thing is, I know next to nothing about guitar pickups. I need a H-S-H set, not too expensive, and reasonably versatile to cover rock, metal, maybe some blues.

Would it be easy enough to install them myself? There're 3 wires coming from the body, one into each pickup cavity so I'm assuming all I'd have to do is maybe solder the wire to the pickup. I've never soldered anything before though, is it easy?

    Thanks!

I'd say it's doable, just find a wiring diagram off the net and go from there. I would say those wires leading into the pickup cavities are pretty useless as the new pickups would have there own connecting wires.

I wired my strat and tele without knowing what i was getting into and i managed okay, you'll need a soldering iron though,

Thanks! Can anyone suggest a set of pickups though? From Thomann or Adverts.ie would be preferable.

....and yes, they come with wiring diagrams!

    :D

Alan, those lipstick pups are pretty cool. That'd look awesome in the neck position of a tele. :)

OP it's really all up to you on what pickups you want. I wouldn't know too much about pickups that would cover you for metal\rock, perhaps some hotrails? there's so many choices out there, even for a tight budget like yours.

How about these with this? Not a waste of money or anything?

The seymour duncans look sweet so they do, i tried looking up some reviews on harmony central but the sites being a bitch for some reason. I'd have a look at the output for the single coil and see how it compares to the humbuckers before going with that one.

    Alan,

the duncan 59 secial is a good versatile pup. That price isn't too much less than the bricks and mortar store price and fitting is free in some stores

GFS are good pickups for the price. If you can afford Seymour Duncans I'd go with them, if you want a cheaper set that are gonna do do the job go with GFS.

For a versatile setup on a budget you could get a set of these with one of these

And with the weak US dollar, this would cost you a little over €50. :D
