I've got a Dlink 4 port wireless router which i've connected through a switch to my server but i want the server to handle Dhcp. I just want to use the wireless router as an access point. I thought i could do it by not using the wan port & disabling dhcp on the router & putting the patch lead from the switch in2 one of the other 4 lan ports. The wlan light is on, but i cant find any network.

Anyone know how i can do it?

Anyone how to reset this thing to factory default, i held reset for 30secs with power off but it not work. Think this router is on the blink

    Help

Got me. I would have thought that setup work also work. Can you connect to the router wirelessly when it's not connected to the switch?

Holding reset doesn't seem to reset some stubborn electronic devices. Try unplugging from mains, hold down reset and plug back in. This *might* reset it.

No difference with other router, not a great one neways. back fiddling with dlink again.

Its just not broadcasting, I've tried
    iwlist wlan0 scan
but get nothing. I've dhcp disabled on router, security disabled. nothin seems 2 work. can't get it back to default either  gonna have to buy an access point.

my main pc has wifi which can be used as AP which i can use for time being, but this means i gotta have it on to use laptop :(

    driving me mad

For all the difference it makes, have you tried searching for a wireless network using a GUI? Is the antenna loose? This caused some havoc here one day ...

Finally got it going, gave to a more experienced m8 @ work, he couldn't get it going till he shortened the SSID, gave it back to me & it worked. All the settings were fine. Brought it home, plugged it in it worked, set encryption & it didn't work. After a bit of fiddling i got it going, but i'm afraid to unplug it or move it. We've come to the conclusion that its knackered. Gotta unplug it 2 move it to the attic with server, gonna buy an AP as i don't wanna be going up there 2 often & cant trust it.

I have an old D-Link wireless router that was working fine for years. I replaced it with another one, and then tried to sell it to someone, but it wouldn't power up. Tried loads of resets etc., but no luck. Eventually plugged it in and just left it for about an hour or so and it started working again. So it seems to work if you leave it plugged in, but leave it powered off for any length of time and it dies again.

Good stuff. Out of curiosity, how long was your SSID? You didn't use the full text of an epic, did you? ;)
