I usually give 10% depending on the prizepool if the dealers are competent.

Ie. you win 300 quid give about 30.

luke you pay 10% reg as well in most cases. 10% is too much to be honest. I'm a big believer in tipping where there is not a standard wage rate (i.e. US resteraunts) but in an irish casino i dont think tipping HAS to be done. personally i do choose to tip. but if i play a 50e game, and finish 3rd and get 250, i'm not paying 25 quid as a tip. 3%-5% i think is ok but again only if dealers are competent.

i've played tourneys where i have had great dealers and tipped accordingly, and where i have had terrible dealers and tipped accordingly.

i dont think players should feel they HAVE to tip.

there are several dealers who if i know they are working during a tourney, whether they deal directly to me or not, i will tip a bit better because they are better at their job and warrant this. effectively you are tipping quality. As an example, Laurent (i think thats his name) who used to be, maybe even still is, in the SE is a fantastic dealer, controls the table, is friendly, deals well etc... he speeds the game up and warrents a tip. however, if there is a dealer who riffles 8 times, cuts the deck 4 times, then chats to seat 1 about the sport on the screen, then misdeals, then riffles 8 times, cuts the deck 3 times, riffles 2 more times then deals slowly and annoys me, the tip will be less.

but back to my original point. 10% of a tip in poker is ridiculous.

I tip if I am in the top 2 or a deal at the end only. 10% is too much as well. Somewhere between 3-6% depending on the prize, with the % getting smaller the bigger the prize.

if its a standard weekly tournament you need to be winning/chopping the prizepool or coming 2nd/3rd before you leave a tip.

In a bigger tournament i think you should give a tip when ur a bit further down the finishing order. I never work out a % i just give what I feel is right. In the SE 100 game I got 4660 and tipped 200 thats 4.3% of what i got, or 5.6% of my profit. I think thats pretty decent tbh.

As I said it all depends on what the prize was. For example last night I won 430 and gave a scalp and twenty five in chips which was left over after I had bought in. If I had won 4 grand i'm not leaving four hundred.

That said I do tend to be quite generous.

It kinda of annoys me when you make the bubble, say 4 get paid, and half the table suggests money off the top for 5th, this comes straight out of 1st place, if I win im also going to leave a tip from this, alot of the table don't dream of tipping so the first place is reduce for me.

I prefere it that if a deal is being discussed, be it an extra paid place or change the last three places so that it is more evenly spread. that a dealer tip be arrange at this point too. that way the first place doesn't take the whole hit.

Playing the SE omaha tournie last Tuesday, it was a marathon affair. We were 5 handed for ages and i was a big chip leader. I suggested taking €30 off 2nd and €30 off 3rd to give bubble his money back. 1st prize stayed as it was. We all agreed

    5% is standard.

Tips in poker in Ireland are a disgrace, the amount of non tippers i see is shocking, both tournaments and cash.

Clearly you shouldnt tip when you win as it just encourages negative behaviours, similar to giving money to beggars on the street.

Some UK cash game poker pro I saw on Tv made a good point. He said he plays on average 40 hours cash game poker a week. In these 40 hours, he reckons he wins maybe 8-9 pots per hour. If he were to give the dealer say a quid for every pot won, he'd be paying 8 quid an hour x 40 = 320 a week. He stated that this is a wage for quite a lot people, and he didn't see why he should have to pay a wage in tips every time he plays poker.

i think it depends on what you win i.e say you come 3rd in a 50 freezeout for 450euro=400 profit.20euro,5% is enough.or say you finish 4th in a 25 rebuy for 270euro and you had to rebuy twice=195euro profit,10 or 15 is plenty to tip.but what do you do if you cash for a five figure sum in a 500 freezeout, say 22000.if it ever happens to me:rolleyes:i would leave around 500euro.now i know thats less than 2.5% but that's still a hell of a tip to give dealers.but i swear the next time a dealer or TD that accompanies me to the cash desk and says dont forget your dealers,i not leaving a tip.THAT boils my blood.you shouldn't be made feel you have to tip.me,i've always left a tip apart from one occasion when i genuinely forgot, but made up for it in later cashes.a few weeks ago i witnessed a staff member in a casino follow a lad that finished 5th in a 60 freezeout for 100euro,40quid profit and asked him did he leave a tip for the dealer, the poor guy seemed shocked that he'd asked him and in a moment of stupidity gave him one of his 25euro chips:eek:i new by the look on his face that he wasn't going to leave a tip out of his little winnings but felt pressured into it.i dont mind the little friendly or jokingly reminders that there all experts at,but to constantly remind people of the dealers tip will do them no good in the future as a lot of players are getting sick of it.that ends my rant.......if you want to tip for the service you were given,do.if not, don't.

Playing 20 hands an hour he would be doing extremely well to win 8-9 an hour. 3-4 would be a lot more likely.

Well, if he failed to see the huge flaw in his thinking then he most likely should be very careful what he does with his money.

You are not obliged to tip at all. As DITPoker says, I will tip good dealers but not incompetent ones. I wouldn't tip more than €1 per hand also unless it's a monstrous pot. I also see no point tipping for small pots. However, if I am at a table with an excellent dealer I will tip regularly and well. It encourages good dealing which is +EV.

Tipping can take a massive chunk from your bottom line so don't go crazy with it.

Also, I was once reminded by the dealer to tip. I have never tipped that dealer since. I know it's petty but it really annoyed me at the time. If I get annoyed I don't play as well.

From now on I'm only going to give dealers food stamps and vouchers. If you give them money they only spend it on drink and drugs.

When I was playing live I always tipped in a tourney 1 or 2nd in a normal weekly tournie... I 've been involdved in some deals where I think there was just way too much left to the dealer but was at the low end of the chips and happy with a deal.....

eg was 3 handed one night and we broke at the end of the level for 5 mins .. When I came back the chip leader and the other player suggested that we take 600 for first and 400 each for second and third and leave 200 for the dealers (100 from 1st and 50 ea for 2 and 3) I really thought it was too much bud with the dealer sitting there I felt embarrassed to refuse and took the deall.... I also felt I wasn't in a palce to argue as I was 3rd in chips as well.... but a fairer deal would have been 700 for the winner and 450 each for 2 and 3 and leave tips accordingly? am I wrong?

Also in cash games when I was playing every night I gave 1 from every pot and 2-5 from some big pots but believe me it did add up considerably... I then moved to leaving a tip when cashing out... On a winnign night I would leave a decent tip for the dealers.....

but on a loosing night I migh not leave any if I left felted but if I had anything to cash out I would always leave something.... I felt it was a better method for me that was playing nearly every night....

But after getting some stick from the players at the table for not ipping I got fed up explaining why i wasn't tipping at the table...... Remember having the "discussion" with a well known Dublin Taxi Driver one night about me not tipping from a pot I won that he was in with me..... I mentioned it to all the dealers at the time and they were fine with it..... Now that I'm only an occassional live player I tip fro every pot I win...

Tipping sould be optional and no one should feel obliged to tip and tip according to service

2-3 % Depending on dealers getting all of the tip and not management

I am a dealer in the SE and work in 2 clubs find that the tips are good in the tournys in both prob about 5%. In the cash games the tips are good in one and brutal in the other. In the 1rst club on an 8 hour night might make 20 euro. In the other for an 8 hour night might make 200. 200 is alot but they are crazy cash players who tip every hand and when cashing out.
