The best referee and the guy who gave us the catch phrase " Let's get it on " in MMA retires :( As the article says, - there will always be just one Big John McCarthy. Not only was Big John a great referee but also a great ambassador of MMA. A former cop with the L.A. PD ( we would'nt hold that against him !!! ) and student of Rorion Gracie, he refereed 535 bouts and was also invovled in backroom discussions / developments of MMA. A true pioneer of MMA.

I heard this last week but was surprised the UFC didn't mention it in the last PPV. I thought for a while it was their big announcment. I hope they make a deal about it and induct him into the hall of fame or something.

He will be involved with other organisations, hence the low key send-off.

Cant believe we wont see him in the Octagon again.

Guida/Huerta was a heck of a fight to go out on.

I believe he will be involved to some degree in commentating, most likely a colour commentator ala Randy, Ken Shamrock etc.

Would really be interested to hear his take on fights

Big John is a class act. The Guida/Huerta fight was, as mentioned, a great fight to go out on.

Yeah, his perspective on a fight would be very interesting.

He won't be doing commentary for the UFC, he doesn't work for them. He works for The Fight Network now, who are a competitor to the UFC in some ways as they broadcast shows from other MMA promotions

Big John really brought a great presence to the Octagon. I always had the sense that if things started to get out of hand he genuinely had the ability to step in and sort it out.
