Ok heres a question, What connection should I get for use with my ps3?
Heres the problem however, broadband is just reaching where im living now and supposedly there are problems with it,this may be through the phone line connection though.
Are there any wireless broadband boxes that can work pretty much anywhere and still be reliable? I'm desperate to start playing online!!

    hi penguinpoppers

i was on the same boat as you up to a couple of months ago.
currently im using eircom 1mb line.
it is through the phone line like you with no problems.

i can even run two ps3 playing warhawk online at the same time off the same router with no lag.

we have a ps3 in both rooms, never a problem with lag.

    hope this helps

    regards

    derek

There are no perfect broadband solutions. I think a lot of it is a matter of luck, if your provider gives good coverage to your area you'll be ok. If not, then you'll be stuck in a 12 month contract before you can try another.

I use Irish Broadband Breeze (doesn't use telephone line) and it is great for my area. I had trouble with it for my first 1-2months - kept logging out/off games. But then one day it just started working and I've never had a single glitch since. I think it was an IBB error somewhere but they fixed it anyway.

I think generally the phone line solutions are probably best, if you have a provider that has good coverage for your area.

Also pay attention to your upload and download limits - if you get one of these 10Gb limit packages, you wont be able to download many games or maybe even use PSHome much when it comes out.

One tip I do have for ya though, is ignore MB speeds.....loads of providers will sell you 6/8MB broadband for stupid money. In reality, that connection is shared between loads of other people and is not as fancy as it sounds. For online games, you could have a 100Mbit connection that doesn't work well. Once you have 1Mbit you will be fine i think. Some providers will give you different upload and download speeds. watch for that. The only important thing is lag - the time it takes for info to get from your computer/ps3 to the internet/sony servers. Unfortunately, I don't think any provider can tell you what lag to expect until your BB is installed. Maybe they can for the phone line packages - not sure.

I guess if you ring them up, tell them you want it for online games - maybe they will come out and check your connection. If your lag is high when sending stuff from your house to your provider (they/you can measure it from your pc when it's online), you're going to have trouble with the faster online games - Pro Evo and stuff like that.

    Hope this helps

Ah finally someone else, are you plugging it straight into the back of the PS3 or using a wireless router, i'm doing to latter and getting a lot of disconnections, prettys sure its IBB, because its fine early in the morning.

1 more question have you tried or got pro evolution soccer 2008 online?

Ah I might be able to help you a bit with this. I spent hours and hours and hours trying to sort it out.

I'm using a wireless router and the ps3 is connected over wireless..with no problems anymore.

What I think you should do is at a time when your being disconnected a lot connect your PS3 directly to the breeze ethernet connection (i.e. no router or anything in between). You'll need to give the PS3 the network settings that you had to give your router before. This will help you identify if it is an IBB problem or a router problem.

If you still get problems when connecting directly to breeze it's a problem at IBBs end. If your call up their tech support (I had to wait about 10mins on hold) - tell them that your having difficulties with your PS3 online and don't have problems with your PC. They will check your connection from where they are and might be able to help

If it works fine without your router then let me know and I'll help ya a bit with setting it up

I have not played Pro Evo 2008 yet - I do play Pro Evo 6 online quite a lot however and it works very well - very rarely any visible lag at all. Warhawk is a good game to test your network connection - even the slightest hiccup and it will quit. Currently I get a ping time of about 26ms off the sony warhawk servers and no disconnects at all.....before it was taking me 1-2 hours to get online once...and i'd get kicked off randomly after that (5mins-2hours).

Let me know how it goes for ya anyway
