We always named ours after where they came from. Lots of Kerrys, which also has a nice calling ring to it.

I think I'd get a minor thrill out of giving orders to "Bertie" all day :D

Lie down, Bertie and shut up !

I think you misread the previous post: it said "white on his face" not: "egg on his face"...

Glen is a nice name. Instead of Bertie you could simply call him Manila as in Manila envelope.

I like biblical names and called my Staffie/Pitbull X 'Jericho'.

I'm getting anoter Pitbull after Christmas and was considering 'Mohammed' or 'Jihad' (seriously) but they wouldn't suit a Sheepdog, so you can't have them :p

I'd have said 'Shep' for a Sheepdog, but its not very imaginative or original.

Don't give the poor dog the name Bertie - everyone will laugh every time you call him, and he'll feel puzzled and hurt.

What about Oscar? Used to be every sheepdog in Ireland was called Oscar. Or Bran, one of Fionn's superdogs (and cousins)?

Generally speaking, it is a good idea to give your dog a two syllable name.

One syllable is reserved for commands (sit, come, stay, down) and three syllables (or more) is too long and awkward to be shouting down a windy beach at full lung capacity.

If the second syllable ends in an "eee" or "aaa" sound, all the better for getting the dogs attention because you can stretch that sound when shouting after it or raise the pitch at the end when giving out.
