Hi All - I've recently started a new Marketing role, and while I have plenty of experience in many aspects of the job, my technical abilities leave a lot to be desired. Apologies in advance if this is an idiotic question, but is there a way of manipulating the likes of google, so that when potential clients input key words, our website is pulled up (preferably first of course, but 1st page would also be good). Any advice is much appreciated, as I am really excited about this role and the experience I will get from it.

What you're essentially looking for is 'Search Engine Optimisation' or SEO. Have a quick look on google for some articles to get you started. There have been a few threads here and on the Webmaster board to get your google ranking up as well just so you know :)

Search results cannot be manipulated. It's all a bit complicated but the more sites that reference your site is one of the scenarios that will push you up the list. If you want to be first on the site then purchase some adwords space, carefully pick your keywords and you may appear in the yellow box at the top!

Site content is the most important thing here - search engines won't look at your site if it's not deemed 'useful'. So make sure there's plenty of relevant text and no spam!!

Search engines also take into consideration the amount of sites that link to your page as a way of rating your 'usefulness', so sign up to relevant online directories (just google the word directories). Some directories are search.ie, browseireland.ie, if you sell things through your site sign up to armchair.ie, and of course sign up to yahoo directory and google directory also. Directories will not sign you up immediately - yahoo and google can take months - but worth it.
