Ok, I've got an 80gb Video iPod and about 40gb of music and video on it. I was using my Desktop PC to update/charge it etc but that PC broke this weekend with no chance of it being fixed. I also have a Sony laptop with itunes on it.

My question is: If I download and install itunes onto my laptop and then plug in my ipod, will it wipe it? I also want to put some new stuff on it from my laptop... Is this going to be a problem?

    Thanks for your help...

Yes, you,ll lose everything. You need a ipod copy program like Xilisoft iPod to PC Copy. That will put all your video and sounds onto your pc in a folder.
Ive done it before many times cannot remember what programme i use.
If you have torrents youll find plenty programs on there.
It wont be a problem putting new stuff but if you want to keep your old stuff on the ipod youll have to use a program like the above, now i have a nano so it could be different but i doubt it.
    Goodluck.

For christs sake, here we go again (hope I don't get a ban for that one). Once again can people stop posting iPod info that they are not sure about.

OP, how is your iPod currently managed, i.e. when you connected it to your old iPod did it automatically update it with the music from your laptop ? You need to ensure that your iPod is set to manually update and then you can stick it on as many machines as you want without loosing any music.

as an owner of an ipod but don't use itunes, is it the ipod that holds the info as to whether or not to automatically sync with the itunes library or is it itunes itself?

The iPod stores it in a file on the drive itself and when itunes connects to it it reads that file, so each iPod will have its own individual setting and will retain it when moved to another computer. You might be able to change the setting before the library gets updated, if you do it quick enough or try to see if you can manually edit the file on the ipod. Its should be in a hidden folder on it.
As for another program reading the file, that feature would have to be supported on it.
