Been on the gay scene for about 6 months now but Im not the biggest fan of the usual music they'd be playing in most places. all seem to be dance music
and im more an indie boy!

just wondering if theres somewhere more like that? an alternative place to meet apart from the george, front lounge, the dragon.

itd be nice to meet a guy that shares some of my musical tastes but it seems
hard to find that in the usual clubs/pubs. i know a lot of gay guys seem to like dance music but there must be somewhere people that arent into dance
    music can meet!!??

Yeah, and anywhere in the North that does alternative.rock music would be appreciated to. I hate dance / R'N'B. Long hair and goatees! Yum!

Its not just dance music, its the wrong kind of dance music. I hate house with a passion...

I was in Spice on Saturday night - it's a gay night in Spy at Powerscourt Centre. It has 4 floors of different music with one of the rooms doing more indie/rock and a kind of chill out room on top if you want to have a sit down conversation with someone. Also I just saw on another post here that GUBU has reopened as pantibar so that might be another alternative for you too

There is a club night called Q&A that plays music more foor your taste, but it is not often, so check the listings in GCN

Realistically you're only hope is a gay night in some normally straight bar. The well established one don't seem to be into anything but ****e music though. Isoldes tower, while not a gay bar, used to be extremely gay friendly and fairly alternative.

Queer and Alternative is far from Alternative. Once, maybe, but about a year ago when they underwent a management chance, mopey emo goths started to dj and played my chemical lapdance shiite. Tori or Morrissey is alternative as they get. I suggest going to Brighton, that's what I'm going to do.

In fairness to Q&A, I haven't been in about 9 months because myself and my friends were so disappointed in with the music. Maybe, hopefully, the music has changed, but I doubt it.

There just is no good gay bar with decent music. There seems to be a small bunch of us gays with musical taste, but that's all. Not enough to have a dedicated venue. Or maybe Dublin gays are generally apathethic towards bar music.

I too also hate that house sh1t.

Can you tell this subject is a bugbear of mine?

I've got the DJ setup and the tech/trance, anyone want to contribute a venue :D

there should be something set up, something on a more regular basis, something with different decent music!

how hard is it to set up a night in a place?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

extremely difficult. Dublin doesn't have that "gay district" other cities have, so its harder to have a wide variety of clubs/pubs. They all play to the middle crowd.

Well there is the option to go to place where being gay will not make people bat.gif an eye lid.

Here's a link to Dominion's lj wihich has the most recent play lists for the club.

They may be to your taste they may not, but certainly people of "alternate" sexuality's
have never been an issue there unless they are just being arseholes.

I always wondered how gay friendly places like fibbers, Frazers, bruxelles ect where.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43,045 ✭✭✭✭Nevyn

Don't know about upstairs in Frazers but dominion and fibber's have always be gay friendly places.

Upstairs in Frazers is extremely rough; and full of eastern European lads. These are not directly connected as it was extremely rough before we got the huge influx of eastern Europeans. Might get in a fight, but theres some good ogling to be had :P

Check out downstairs of the Oak on Dame Street - its free in and indie music central!

Phantom Fm are doing their nights again, Sinead Ni Mhordha DJ's at Ladyflash at the Button Factory- every wednesday night, 11.30!

Phantom FM are also doing a New Years Eve party in the village.
I think the Button factory might also be indie on Thursdays.

Whelans is also indie on Fridays and Saturdays - tho can be very air-guitar!.

Fibbers is not as good as it used to be, they play more metal than indie.

ANTICS is great every Wednesday in Crawdaddy - much more indie than Whelans. Gets quite a big gay crowd some nights too.

Q+A (queer and alternative) is a gay indie night on a few times a year.
Its back in the vaults, behind Connolly Station on Friday January 25th 2008.
(The site www.queerandalternative.com should have full info in the new year)
Q+A has 4 rooms with 4 different kinds of music.
    Indie music in one room
Bowie Vs. Morrissey in one room
    Indie Karaoke in another room.
There's a radiohead giveaway on the night - so expect to dance to some radiohead tunes.
It had over 800 ppl attend the last time, so you should have no problem meeting a like minded fella there :)

Oh, theres Bruxelles too - its off Grafton street - but no dancefloor there!
Oh and also Carnival on Wexford street - cool tunes but again no dancefloor!

what part of bruxelles!? ive been there loads of times but suppose ive usually been downstairs since my friend likes heavier rock!

are all the ones you are saying at the top, gay night or just indie nights?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭speedy21

The ones above are just indie nights - Except Q+A, which is 100% gay.
Think I got all of Dublin's indie nights in there.
Apart from upstairs in Doyles but the place is straight as they come!

The next Q+A is on Friday Jan 25th in The Vaults behind Connolly station.
The bebo page has more info http://queerandalternative2.bebo.com

So indie night = gay friendly? As for doyles I used to go there with the ex. I wouldn't say its straight as they come but its certainly the type of pub that encourages drunken aggressive behavior.
