Play.com problem

I wanted to buy items on Play.com(DVD's) totalling £54.97, I clicked on the Euro converter and the total came to €85.97. Is this just a glitch or are Eurozone buyers being charged more than UK buyers because I tried several currency converter sites which all calculate £54.97 at about €76.22.

Play have been adding roughly 10% to their £-€ conversion for a little while now. I can only assume it's intended to cover the extra cost of delivery, but it's a bit high, and also underhanded to bury it in the exchange rate like this.

That does sound a little high... they usually round it up to the nearest .49 or .99 when converting to Euro
How many items were you trying to buy?

    I don't think this is unique to play.com !

I got on to them and they sent me an email sayings it's because of the exchange rates and the added cost of shipping to eurozone countries.

So much for free delivery then.

Wow... They basically just said "So... yeah... our free delivery isn't free". Or, if you have seen the ad for the bank (can't recall which one), "The free delivery doesn't work like that!".

Any time i am buying online now and the option is there for sterling or euro, i price the goods in sterling , then convert it to euro give or take a couple of cent, then see what the euro price comes in from the retailer
Almost 100% of the time the sterling price is better and if i can i buy in sterling
Its amazing how it all adds up, very sneaky

Bollox it is. If they added 2-3% for the extra shipping cost then I'd be OK with it, but 10% is just extortion. This is nothing short of screwing eurozine customers.

It's getting harder and harder to find a decent online DVD source. At least sendit.com still let you pay in £ sterling, their euro conversion also runs at about 10% extra though.

Considering they state "European customers outside the UK will be charged in Euros", people everywhere else can avail of sterling prices with free delivery, its really sneaky what their doing

Everyone should send an email complaining again & threatening to boycott them. The last time people did, they stopped doing it.
I wouldn't mind if they did as Blahdvd did & started charging for delivery, but Play are just plain sneaky. I bought from the various companies around €300 worth of stuff in the last few weeks & a lot of that money would have gone to Play had it not been for this.

An online petition might do the trick.

All I did was fill in one of those online query abot technical faults with the site (which is what I thought it was originally).

Fill that in and include a comment and they'll email you back (then you have the address to send your angry ramblings to).

Don't forget that your credit card company is most likely charging you 1.5% currency conversion (they usually mask it with another fancy term) as well. Check your (paper) statement carefully.

They're still marking up considerably when you switch to Euros

    Example:
Superbad is £12.99, which is €17.36
Their site converts it to €20.49, which is near an 18% markup.

    Example:
    Nemesis - Volume 2 is £10.49, which is €14.02
Their site converts it to €16.49, which is again a 17/18% markup.

    Example:
    Iain M. Bank's Matter is £10.99, which is €14.69
Their site converts it to €17.49, which is a 20% markup!

Shockingly poor and yet they're still claiming "Free Delivery"
