strange batterys

I have a Minolta Dimage 7i and the rechargable batterys that came with it are not holding there charge anymore.

The thing is these batterys (they look like normal AA batterys) are not normal and I can't find replacements.

    The batterys specs are,

    Sanyo model MR-3U 1.2v R6, ni-mh 1850mAh

It's the 1850 spec that seems to be the problem and so far other batterys I've tried don't work and I've afraid of trying random batterys incase I do damage to the cammera.

Your Dimage 7i takes AA battery's it may have a technical fault.

Throw in some new Duracell and if there is no life get it repaired in a service centre.

If it takes AA batteries then any batteries will do. The 1850 is a measure of the 'capacity' of the batteries, any rechargeable AA NI-MH batteries ought to do fine, a higher number just means they'll last longer, lower and you'll find they'll run out all the faster. If your original batteries are old its entirely possible that they're just worn out, I tossed a set of NI-MHs recently and got a fresh set, they'd lasted me many a year though.

This might be a bit misleading, My Fuji P&S works fine on high capacity NI-MHs , but will literally die after taking one shot if I stick a set of duracells in ...

Normal AA Alkaline batteries are 1.5 volts compared to 1.2V for NiMH.
NiMH deliver much more current and have higher capacities (the mAh).
Consequently NiMH batteries are great for high drain devices like digital camersa with big LCDs and speedlites.

The 1.2V can often cause issues tho, the fuel meter on my 350D doesn't work with them in the grip but they last ages anyway. I'd go with the Duracels to check the camera and get some new NiNHs.

Sanyo etc now have hybrid NiMH batteries that don't loose their charge as easily as standard NiMHs. They come at around 2100mAh but last longer due to the slow discharge when not in use.

I'm just after noticing that, the batteries are rated at 1.2v instead of 1.5v. As far as I can remember the ordinary batteries did nothing when I tried them last. Are 1.2v not common? So far the batteries are holding the charge long enough to take the photos and get them transferred again so I'm making do.

1.5V is the norm for AAs. Rechargable AA batteries tend to nearer 1.2V.
    Current is more important tho.
