Send front and back of credit card?

    I ordered a Wii recently from http://www.elcorteingles.es/

Just now I got an email requesting (translated from Spanish to English through Google):
We will get in touch with you to inform you that should send mail front and back of your credit card and his identity document

I've no intention of sending them anything. Surely this is a stupid thing to ask for? I've certainly never heard of it before.

I've had Pixmania ask for ID when ordering the first time but asking for both sides of the card is a bit much.

I doubt it's a scam because they are a well know retailer but I'm not happy sending it.

    Any advice?

It's a common enough practice, but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it.
I placed a large order with Thomann.de and they requested the same, but suddenly decided that they trusted me when I said I'd just take my business elsewhere:p

I've been asked this before also and would no way do it. I mean they are asking for your CVV number off the back of your CC basically....ugh.

I've heard of companies looking for ID to verify you are the cardholder, but I've never heard of them asking for a copy of the card. It's not something I'd give them, you've no idea who will pick this up at the other end of a fax line or email.

I've done it occasionally in the past, though not at all in recent times. It seems to be a more common practise in non-english speaking countries.

    Hi

done it before, just cover the ccv number and also couple of digits on the front, they do it to make sure that names are the same in both items also that signature in passport matches the signature on CC.

    Regards

Thanks for the replies all. I figured it was just a security measure but scanning in my card (and if they wanted ID, my Passport) and blurring out details didn't seem worth the hassle once they told me they had a stock delay.

I suppose they're getting a lot of overseas business at the moment and are just covering their backs

i made a large order with thomann.de and they asked me for this, however they instructed me to black out all the digits (incl CVV number) bar the last 4 in the credit card no.

i did this in paint and had no problems at all

i think its just so they can be sure that you are in posession of the card on big transactions?
