The Golden Ball, ah memories ...

I worked in the Golden Ball as a lounge boy over 20 years ago. The upstairs was converted in 1985 to a snooker room. Tom Palmer (Brian's Dad) knew this snooker player with a weird pair of Glasses, Dennis something ....Taylor, yeah, that was it. Tom got Dennis to agree to attend the "Grand opening" of the snooker room. Those of you old enough may recall that was the year Taylor beat the mercurial Steve "interesting" Davis in the epic World Snooker Final. Taylor, a relative unknown in those days, was 10-1 against winning.

He lost the first 11 frames and went out to a hundred to one against winning. He won it on the final re-spotted black in the final frame at about 2 in the morning (18/17 I think). That was a wonderful night which made for one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history and one of the greatest Irish sporting moments.

A week later, I as a spotty 15 year old, was working the lounge in the Golden Ball. Taylor turns up in a limo. There's about 5 times the fire-officer's allowance of punters in the premises. You couldn't move. People came from far and wide to meet this man now known as Dennis "Lazarus" Taylor. It was so packed in the pub Brian (my boss at the time!!) told me just to collect glasses and forget about orders.

One punter begged me to get him a pint of Smithwicks and a G & T, I told him I couldn't but he shoved a big blue £20 note into my hand and said, if I got it for him I could keep the change. Now, my wages at that time were a poxy brown £5 a night, so this was pretty cool. Even cooler was the fact that I got the guy his drink, couldnt find him, drank his drink and kept the change anyway.

To claim a little history, I recommend this tourney which I know will be played in the snooker hall upstairs once opened by the legendary Dennis Taylor.

AFAIK this tourney has a max 50 players. I played there last week and paid deposit for this game, it was announced that there where only 6 places left. My advise check it out first, should be a great game but its bit outa the way to arrive and then be disapointed.
