I'm not sure if this linitation applies to this product, but maybe you should re-consider buying Western Digital: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7136069.stm

I believe you'll find its not WD as such doing this but the manufacturer of the software that WD is shipping with the disks.

    mv myhomemovie.avi myhomemovie.txt :D

It really wouldn't put me off buying them

Even though I dont share digital media that would put me off buying them on principle. Thats pretty worrying that a hard drive manufacturer can start trying to decide (in the interests of big media companies/& hollywood studios) what sorts of files you can store/share when you use their products. Where do they get the idea that its any of their business ?

Ps I know there would be ways around this but why should people have to do that to accomodate interference from a company that should just stick to making products. I cant understand how this company would think that this is in their commercial interest to try and limit its products use like that. They cant possibly be afraid of a lawsuit so this doesnt make much sense to me.

Its only if you are using the software "Anywhere Access"
Western Digital has blocked users from sharing more than 30 different file types, if they are using the company's software, called Anywhere Access.

Sorry I rarely install the software that these things come with ...

If you want to really play with the drive you can do all sorts of amazing stuff ...

    http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/start

I'm not suddenly going to stop buying or supporting what I find to be a great drive because 1 piece of software that happens to ship with the drive that I don't actually have to install won't let me share certain types of files. Its a problem with that piece of software not with the drive as I see it.

Completely agree. I wont be buying WD products while they see fit to ship software which potentially restricts my usage of their hard drives. Also agree that from a commercial point of view its a very odd thing for WD to do. Doesnt seem to be in their interest at all.

mite go for this drive. Was looking around for one that was portable and powered by USB. Travelling next year so would like something light and easy to bring as extra hard drive

AS for the software, I aint going to be installing it but i agree with peoples issues with it being supplied. But their drives are good so not gonna be put off

Edit: What do people think on this one http://www.dabs.ie/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=49PN&CategorySelectedId=11157&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11157,48950000

Ruu - thanks! Komplett also have an expected date for stock now, now just to decide whether to wait and save a few euro or let impatience rule :)
