Im looking for a recommendation for a good but compact external usb powered hard drive.

    Needs to be the following:

    - Reaonably priced (Sub €300 would be nice, sub €200 even better)
    - USB Powered, dont want to have to go looking for a socket everytime I want to used it. (Firewire would be nice too, but USB is preference)
    - In or around the 500GB Storage as I'll be using it to backup my photos, music and DVDs also.
    - Compact, something small and light enough to fit in my laptop bag.

    Any help appreciated guys :)

    Tox

Doesn't tick all your boxes, but I've been using the WD Mybook 500GB (bought from komplett) for about 6 months and it's great. Has Fwire800/400 and USB.

But it's powered by a separate plug and it's never been a problem when using it to find a socket.

Also, if you're looking for Firewire, I'm unsure if devices can be powered by a Firewire cable, you may want to look into that.

All in all, I'd recommend the WD mybook, they're well made. (just remember to format it NTFS @ default before you use it!).

ps When I got it, it cost 170 + p&p, great price

The biggest I've seen powered by USB is 300GB one here for €163.15. They have many that are around 250GB, more selection than Komplett.ie.

You won't get a 500GB 2.5" for another year at least. You're either going to have to go with a 3.5" drive (that'll be mains powered) or settle for something smaller.
