Michael Vick Sentenced to 23 months in Prison

As a volunteer worker for various Greyhound rescues, I am horribly biased on this topic. But I think most people believe he got what he deserved for just outright stupid and barbaric behaviour:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071210/ap_on_sp_fo_ne/fbn_vick_sentencing;_ylt=Aou1g8X59CQPFqcXQFfMExWs0NUE

RICHMOND, Va. - Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison Monday for his role in a dogfighting conspiracy that involved gambling and killing pit bulls.

The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback could have been sentenced up to five years by District Judge Henry E. Hudson. Vick was dressed in a black-and-white striped prison suit and apologized to the court and his family.

Hudson responded, "You need to apologize to the millions of young people who looked up to you."

    "Yes, sir," Vick said.

Vick acknowledged he used "poor judgment" and added, "I'm willing to deal with the consequences and accept responsibility for my actions."

Before the hearing started, Michael Vick's brother, Marcus Vick, sat with his right arm around their mother, comforting her as she buried her head in her hands and wept.

Vick pleaded guilty in August, admitting he bankrolled the "Bad Newz Kennels" dogfighting operation and helped kill six to eight dogs.

In a plea agreement, he admitted bankrolling the dogfighting ring on his 15-acre property in rural southeastern Virginia and helping kill pit bulls that did not perform well in test fights. He also admitted providing money for bets on the fights but said he never shared in any winnings.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank called the sentencing "another step in his legal journey.

"This is a difficult day for Michael's family and for a lot of us, including many of our players and fans who have been emotionally invested in Michael over the years," Blank added.

"We sincerely hope that Michael will use this time to continue to focus his efforts on making positive changes in his life, and we wish him well in that regard."

How long will he likely serve?

Hes one of the top players over there right?

He was one of the highest paid, yes. One of the best players? Doubtful, but there were plenty who would argue it.

It's a deserved sentence and in my opinion he was lucky that is all that he got. This whole mess could even bankrupt him - only 2 years after signing a $130 million contract deal with the team.

Shameful day for Vick. What was he at, can never understand the mentality behind it. Was a very exciting player, and his runs from scrimmage on a scramble were unreal. He was just getting his throwing right and this season could have been his real breakthrough as a balanced QB. But, it wasnt to be, and he seems to be taking things on the chin and admitting to his faults. He is rightly serving time for his sactions, and hopefully it will be a catalist to stop this sort of thing in general. It was also a bit ironic to mention Marcus Vick in the article too, seeing as he has had his fair share of dealings in court too.

He was a **** QB, one of the worst in the league tbh. But he got away with it because he was enetertaining. He certainly wont be missed by me.

Are you kidding? The guy was (/is?) incredibly talented. Before he derailed his life with neanderthal extra-curricular activities, he was one of the top 3 QBs in the NFL. It was like watching the Michael Vick show at times. All the players around him seemed to become invisible. Have you even checked his stats? The guy is a 3 times Pro Bowl pick. His rushing numbers are off the charts: 1st player ever to rush 100yds, what about his 100 rush, 250 pass game record? I could go on, but don't need to.

He became inconsistent after he signed the 10 year >$100M contract. Yet still pulled out some stellar games.

So tell me how you came up with your comment? Is that fact-based? You used the acronym tbh. I recommend you don't over use this phrase; your integrity might be called to question.

Top 3 QB's in the nfl? Rofl(oh woops, another acronym, my integerigy is down the toliet now!).

    2006 QB rating 75.7(20th)
    2005 QB rating 73.1(20th)
    2004 QB rating 78(20th)
    2002 QB rating 81.6(18th)

Yep, a definite top 3 indeed.

    Good point, except:

QB rating is a passer's rating. Does not indicate rushing yardage.

The Falcons have gone 9-3 in the past with Vick outside the top 10 according to the 'traditional' QB rating.

Despite mediocre protection, the guy still rushed huge yardage and scored touchdowns. How about "most prolific rushing QB the NFL has ever seen"?

My point is, you said: "He was a **** QB, one of the worst in the league tbh". Is that comment based solely on his passing average???

This is bad. I have ended up defending the record of a dog-killer. Please don't assume I'm a fan of his. I'm not. Just trying to refute a falsehood here.

Vick was not a Top 3 quarterback, sorry. He never has been and now probably never will.

    7-9 in 2006
    8-8 in 2005
    11-5 in 2004

Playoffs once and NFC championship once also. That is not the record of a Top 3 NFL quarterback no matter what way you look at it.

davepvd dude QBs throw footballs RB make runs. Vick was good not great but was more entertaining than anything. Top 3 QB give me a break come on look at the guys hes behind in todays game still Brady,Manning,Favre,Big Ben,Brees,Palmer,Romo, Mcnabb <--- not particular order just naming names of guys who are QB's for real and didnt need to run everytime they fell out of a pocket and couldnt throw anymore. It annoys me to think that people class great QBs on guys that run all the time yes every one likes a qb that can get yards on the ground when needs be but if you want a huge running game get a decent RB to run the ball and a QB to THROW the ball.

Means fook all when it gets you no where now in fairness. I seen Schaub play against the Patriots for the injured Vick in the Georgia Dome a couple of years back and have to say as a Pats fan i was more worried about schaub that day than i would have been about Vick. Schaub tore the Pats D assunder and made the Falcons actually look good Roddy white had a stormer of a day as did crumpler. Sitting beside a Falcons either side they will tell you it opened their eyes to see how much better off the Falcons would have been with a real QB. And yes QB ratings are based on passing as the primary job of the QB is to throw the ball.:p

Vick was a better QB than most people think...Look at his situation..Atlanta, no go to guy bar crumpler, sometimes.
Look at what Harrington and Leftwich have done in Atlanta. Yeah, awful, also not their fault. It's a bad place to be in and no QB would post great numbers in there

Yes because they built their playbooks around M Vick. Their Linemen are more mobile than most to cover vicks plays but weak at stopping the pass rush plus the have alot of rookies who need pratice. Sad part is putting harrington and leftwich in there. And for receivers how can you bad mouth guys who never got footballs thrown their way  The playbooks are the problem for poket qbs plain and simple whole new offence after running Vicks style for so long.

He is far from top 3.

I would rather a qb that can pass a ball than run 1000 yards in a season.

    Anyone wish to disagree?

he is far from top 3, but he is also far from bottom 3 or being labelled a **** QB, one of the worst in the league. He was a middle of the pack QB, and would never have been above that. His running kept him above others whose throwing was as weak as his.

    Totally agree

He may have been an average QB, but he is (was) a great athlete... And it's a shame, he was the Atlanta Falcons, look at them now...

Seemingly with good behaviour and all, the earliest he could get out would be April/May of 2009 (according to ATH anyway) which would have him out in time for training camp if some team wanted him..

Should he get another chance? He probably should, if he had a normal job and was sent to prison for 2 years, when he gets out you would expect him to still be employable, just not with the top employers... Which is why i expect him to come out of jail, and if he's fit & willing to sign with a poor team who are struggling at QB...

Look at it this way, if he had been in jail 2 years ago and came out this season, would someone like the Dolphins signed him? I think so...

So hopefully he'll be gone for a while, he'll do his time, and maybe we'll see him again... Maybe...

He still has his trial in Virgina in April to get through. Some are saying that that could add a few years to his sentence.
Also some "experts" are saying that he might only come back to the NFL in a different position e.g RB.

It's a pity to see someone so gifted throw iit all away on such stupidity. Whatever about his QB ability he was always exciting to watch and had that bit of flair that is sometimes missing in the NFL.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,044 ✭✭✭BigBenRoeth

Well talking about his skill,He was the best scrambling QB by far.....but his throw was iffy....and he has such an attitude that hes a terrible leader,
And as for his sentence.....proper order, simple as.
