Let me start by saying 'what a load of cock'.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/article_discussion.php?article_id=89090

Seems that unlike the US version of No More Heroes we are getting the censored Japanese version. Thank you Rising Star games, I was looking forward to this game. I presume we can blame our german brethern for this one a little as well.

I hope it works with mod chips because if it does, I'll be getting my Wii chipped to play the US version.

    Balls to that!!!

Although, tbh I think that the reason for releasing the censored version here is that they are afraid it'd go the same way as Manhunt 2 which was released in the states but still turned down here because it was still too disturbing/violent

Probably. It's just great that we get a cut down version of one of the most interesting looking games in a long time because a game with no merit whatsoever got banned.

It's not like it's cut down in any meaningful way though, is it? Everything important to the game will still be there, we're just losing a bit of window dressing. I'm happy that a publisher's interested in giving such a heavily stylised oddball a European release at all. (Note Katamari Damacy.)

Its backwards were going with these laws, 15 years ago it was mortal kombat but things progressed

now thanks to this jack thompson and others things are going the other way
I can't understand why they just can't make games 18 and not let people under the age buy it? just like in the movies

A shame. Game is looking terrific though, even though I have never spent much time in the company of Killer 7 (only one brief play in a friend's house). Lightsaber action should be worth the admission, since Lucasarts seem reluctant to get their asses in gear and get the Force Unleashed onto our Wiis.

But yeah, the whole censorship debacle is becoming laughable. Imagine the uproar if they cut the gore out of a film these days? It wouldn't be so bad but the art style of Heroes is as far removed from our regular perception of reality as you are likely to get. It's basically like editing a cartoon, which just seems foolish.

Unless it's Legend of the Overfiend, in which case I am pro censorship to keep that nonsense away from non-suspecting eyes.

F*cking ridiculous, here i was with fingers crossed that it'd just be the Germans with the cut version as per usual (Are they trying to make up for the Holocaust?)

Feck it, I might have to look into getting my Wii chipped as well... I'm sure that it'll still rock without the gore, but it looked so damn cool in any video I've seen:(

    Just want to point out..

This isn't censorship. The original version of the game (the Japanese version) and is published by Rising Star has NO gore or blood. Ubisoft who are publishing the game in the US have decided to alter the game's code in order to add in blood and gore for the US market. Kinda makes a statement about what they think of north American games players. So it's the Americans who are getting an altered version.
Europe is getting the original unaltered Japanese version. That's not censorship.

I'd say the truth lies a bit inbetween the two. Suda had intended the game to be very very violent (more violent than Manhunt 2 is what he'd said before). Removing blood/gore is sort of like pre-emptive censorship. I think he wanted it in the game but probably had to remove it. Early Japanese vids had lots of blood in them.

Resi Evil 4 for instance had decapitations, but they removed them for the Japanese market (the "original" version). The American and European (bar Germany) versions had the decapitations.

I'd say rising star games picked up the rights to the japanese game and just don't have the budget to edit the game and add in the gore like Ubisoft would. Bit of a shame. I'll probably end up getting it but I'll wait and see if the animations are a borked as some people suggest they are in the censored version.

No More Heroes out on Friday here, for anyone who is interested. Censored version alas, but good to see a more offbeat Wii game getting a release.

Or just get the uncensored version:

    Wii Freeloader Thread.

I'm currently playing the US edition, wow!
Certainly there is a lot of blood spurting about, but I don't think the replacement of it with the black pixellated stuff will harm it at all, in fact it may just be more fitting.

    Great game though!

Yeah personally can't imagine the lack of blood making all that difference - the game and gameplay is still there, just with black instead of red. Not the original vision, but hardly game ruining.

In any case, I'll be picking it up bright and early in the morning rather than wait to import it, get freeloader etc...

Here's what you miss. Looks pretty significant to me. This is why I got Freeloader and No More Heroes (US).

Don'y get me wrong, there is a lot of the old claret flowing about, but due to the art direction in the game, and it's, at times, rather loose grasp on reality, a lack of the red stuff wouldn't damage it one but.
Also, it should be said, the creators had to "patch" the blood effects into the game for the US market, it was never really meant to have gallons of the stuff all over the place.

Killer 7 was far more disturbing though, still sends shivers down my spine, lets hope the spirit of Clover studios will continue to provide us with such avant garde thrills

the blood was the way it was meant to be dont know what youre on about that they added it in. as for clover.... what have they got to do with this or killer 7?

Played for an hour or so there and it is great fun. Combat feels wonderfully visceral, the script is very funny (great cut scenes too) and overall a hugely enjoyable experience. Graphics look good most of the time, although it can be a bit difficult to make out where you are going in the hub city. Controls are excellent and some superb original touches (
a bizarre phone call that is channelled through the wiimote mic is a notable highlight so far
    )

Oh, and no, the lack of gore makes very little difference really. It is noticable during some of the cut scenes, but overall it is a very minor concern. Definitely wouldn't bother me, and doesn't influence me to go through the hassle of freeloading and importing (Brawl is a different story altogether though :))

The gore looks fairly cool (if a little disturbing the first few times), but is definitely not as neccesary as I thought it would be. If anything it feels kind of out of place compared to the styling of the rest of the game.

Pretty fun so far anyway, even if the free roaming sections are utter crap

Supposedly that is the point - some kind of weird commentary on the video game 'sandboxes' which are anything but, instead being restrictive and misleadingly open.

Of course, that fact doesn't make coconut picking any more exhilirating, but there is apparently a reason behind the ****tyness ;)

just got this yesterday - absolutely loving it apart from one major thing, the motorbike parts are absolute crap. i was going around on it today and i felt like ploughing into some cars but for some reason they all have some sort of an invisible forcefield around them!! anyone else notice this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,007 ✭✭✭Gerard_Smith

The game is great but the fact is this is one of the few instances where the removal of gore actually make a difference. If I could find somewhere that had the freeloader in stock I would honestly import the American version.

Honestly, it really doesn't make all that much difference! Occasionally noticable, but one cutscene after the first boss (now moving onto the fourth) is the only time Ive noticed the lack of blood thus far. Otherwise it is all plain sailing. I am still not promoting censorship, but here it only make a minor difference. Everything else is still there: the humour, the satire, the great gameplay, the insanity, the hyperstylisation and even the swearing. Import it if you really, really must have the gore, but it is still perfectly fine without it, and is no where near the catastrophe myself and many others feared when the lack of gore was first announced.
