not sure about the headphones, i've used my nokia BT headset a couple of times but just for chat, not sure how it works in-game.

Other OS wise, it's not really worth it till there's something worth doing on it tho, i.e. a proper full blown HD streaming media interface, along the lines of XBMC. But there are PowerPC versions of Ubuntu, Fedora, yellow dog and other linux distro's out there all for free that you can try.

Now there is a linux version of XBMC that will work on Ubuntu (and a few other OS's) but it's not quite ready yet I don't think, and I don't think any of the extra OS's you could run are able to harness all the power of the PS3 yet either, so it won't have enough juice to run anything worth running, be it XBMC, VLC or whatever.

sure, if you want to play around with it then by all means go ahead, but you'll need a HDTV (it won't install if you only have an SDTV) a keyboard & mouse.

you also might want to backup everything on your PS3 first, as iirc it'll get wiped in the repartitioning operation.

there's plenty of giuides out there tho, so google away and you are sure to find a step by step guide if you want to give it a shot. if nothing else, it's a learning experience. :)

I'm looking for a keyboard for the PS3 myself, but I don't think I'll find what I'm looking for just yet.

Ideally I'm looking for a bluetooth keyboard with a built-in trackpad in a nice shiny blackjust like the PS3. i'm amazed that 1 year on, nobody has made one yet. there's 1 or 2 with some of what I'm looking for, but nothing that matches my needs closely enough that I have found. mind you it's been a couple of months since I last looked.

    Doesnt work with Ubuntu!

Maybe not right now but I think he's looking to use it on his PS3 (w/o Linux installed). Is having Linux on the PS3 worth it when it gets native divx playback support. I'm not sure what else that majority of people would use it for other than that on the PS3

    EDIT:
Just done a quick search and it looks like some people managed to get it running in Ubuntu:

There's a link to an Italian page with instructions on enabling the device.

thanks for the link Vorrtexx, that's pretty much exactly what I was looking for.

As for the Ubuntu thing, I haven't yet, but initially when I got the PS3 it was due to a lack of a HD telly (no SD resolution support with the PS3 linux installs), which I now have.

Now it's due to a full 60gb hdd and a lack of enthusiasm for backing up and/or downloading everything all over again.

methinks that it might be a good time to upgrade the hdd to something a little more roomy though and giving Ubuntu a go.not sure if I'll have enough free time before xmas tho.

as for reasons, well there may not be too many right now, but if we can et a little bit of hardware 3D accelleration under Linux on the PS3 with a bit of DirectX or OpenGL emu action, then the (currently beta) Ubuntu port of XBMC might just be the perfect solution for all the media playing/streaming needs of PS3 owners the world over.

unfortunately for all of us, there's not a lot of hope at the XBMC forums that that's going to happen any time soon.

BUT...just imagine if it were possible.

An unstoppable internet enabled Media hub for your home, able to play any video or audio format you throw at it in full 1080p HD glory streamed either over your LAN or the internet. the versatility of XBMC with the full power of the PS3 behind it. Oooh, that would be a day to remember. :D
