Did anybody ever get an old photo print from the national archive? I want to get one as a present for Christmas, what the procedure?

actually, has anyone ever given a thought to what will happen their photos once they shuffle off this mortal coil?
might be an idea to sort your photos and pick out ones which the archive might be interested in, and leave them in a folder on your computer called "in case of my death"...

I'd imagine due to lack of backups 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000's photos will be lost in the coming years because people either fail to backup stuff to hd, dvd's, cd's, fail to print stuff and also fail to given people their root password/login for their pc so even when they die people can't access there PC to gain access to their photos

Funny you should say that (not because I've lost any photos, just funny). The digital revolution has somewhat cheapened the whole photographic experience, from a layman's point of view. In that its very easy for somebody with very little technical ability to take a large number of shots and store them on a PC or laptop or ext device. And as much as these images, in themselves, will last forever, this ability is really only as good as the storage media. But, as you've so rightly pointed out, the ordinary joe in the street may not actually have given this any thought and easily lose a lot of their photos, without having anything in the way of redundancy to cover. Thus, making it all the more important for the rest of us to ensure that the slice of society we have chosen to record is secure and as fail proof as possible. For posterity.

I've recent;y began a backup routine for my stuff,

My desktop is my main machine so I have all photos on that, once a month I backup all my photos to a external 500GB drive and I also mirror the backup to my laptop (will only keep doing this as long as the archive is small enough to fit on the laptop)

I'm looking to expand on this by backing up to a 2nd driove which I will keep in my parents house, and also want to get a fire proof safe or lock box for my 1st harddrive.

The backups on my ext harddrives will remain unencrypted so anyone can access the data in the event of my death,

I'd be interested to hear what other people do,

Well we haven't had many global warming fires in this part of the world (yet). Only flooding. So far. :D

I keep mine simple. Store all on an ext HD. Backup to a second ext HD. And every now and then create an image of the drive, stored on tape, in a friends house. The only thing that can stop me is a national catastrophe. Or two burglaries. Or two fires. Or a thermonuclear device set off in the centre of Dublin. Rest assured my drives are bird flu proof though. So no worries there... !

/me aims EMP at Dublin City,
    mwhahahaha

I'd bet good money there's alot of people here using no kind of backup solution

but what do people envision happening their photos once they're dead?
will it be a case of relatives not caring either way, and wiping thousands of your photos from existence? does that thought bother anyone, or are they comfortable with it?

I think if you really thought about it, you would not mind if alot of your photos were obliterated, have an honest look at your collection and you will probably realise you could delete alot.

Think I'll have a casket with an LCD screen randomly displaying shots. And the opposite of a periscope going from ground level down so people can see.(whats the opposite of a periscope?). Course thats assuming all EMP's have been banned at that point - "hey, remember the great EMP amnesty of 2095"
Seeing as we're really only at the dawn of this change in storage (from analog to dig) its something that hasn't really become any sort of issue yet. By the time the first digital generation are pushing up the daisies there might be untold methods of storage and archiving.

Strange...i was just talking about this kind of thing the other day with my wife.
i was saying how it would be pretty nice (for want of a better word) to have a selection of the best/your favourite shots youve taken over your lifetime displayed at your funeral.
Kind of the last exhibition youll have.

Or, if you don't feel like waiting, you could gatecrash strangers funerals with a dig frame and some business cards :D

I fully intent to donate them but have to sort and organise them first. Wouldn't leave it till yer dead as you are depending on people who usually don't even know what a jpeg is, never mind how to turn a pc on.
