and dont forget that the mechanic will charge to fit your engine and if there is a problem with the engine I am sure he will charge to remove it again. Be very sure of where you buy it from.

Engine specialist? Does the engine need to be reconditioned?

Look, a paraletic monkey could nearly fit an engine, it isn't that hard. A mechanic holds himself out as being qualified to fix cars. If he can't remove an engine then, frankly he is bugger all good.

Why don't YOU go to your local mechainc and ASK him to do it. He will charge good money, as there is a fair bit of work involved, but any good mechanic will be able to do it.

Someone might have ignored a little red light that looked a little bit like an oil can for a little while... . Anyway, go UK for the engine and get a mechanic to fit it but don't be surprised if the cost of fitting is fairly substantial it involves a good deal of work and time.

Any mechanic can fit an engine. Many amateurs could too.

After you change the engine it'll then need some expensive TLC from a franchise dealer or a serious Volvo specialist (which there are none of in Ireland) to get the electronics sorted as the ECU needs to be "mated" to the body computers. Post a message on the UK Volvo owners group forum where you'll find people who have a lot more experience in this kind of thing.

I doubt that. I would assume all one would buy would be the bare engine (e.g. block and head) and the ancilliaries would be carried over.

    LOL brilliant :D

drdre - Why do you need someone cheap? Sure in a thread not so long ago you were bragging about your 07 gti and how you could afford so many more things than other's on here... surely you can afford to have an engine fitted?

Lesson #1, 'reliable' and 'cheap' dont go in the same sentence.

Please go get a life you looser, Sorry for being so in your face but you have wrecked my head over the past week,

    1) It's spelt 'Loser'

    2) You're calling me a loser, yet you're the one who's getting worked up on an internet forum? Lol the irony :p I wish I could lower to your level of name calling on the internet, however i've got a life so won't resort to that. If I have wrecked your head, why don't you try the IGNORE button? Personally your posts are nothing but a waste of bandwidth imho, have you ever contributed to the forum? ie. Posted something worthwhile... I highly doubt it (But please do correct me if i'm wrong)

    3) Any monkey can fit an engine for cheap. However i'd be inclined to let a professional fit it and do it right. Why don't you try some mechanics outside the pale, they tend to be cheaper, since CHEAP seems to be top of your list

In my experience in keeping old cars on the road, trying to find "reliable and cheap" mechanics are as common / easy to find as "intelligent and blonde" women :D

(What do an intelligent blonde and a UFO have in common? You often hear about them, but you never see one. :p )

You really get what you pay for, if you want to get a cowboy to do a cheap and cheerful job, thats your look out, but it will came back to bite you on the arse.

Have you actually asked any mechanics apart from your usual guy who is too busy at the moment? How much ahev they quoted you? I would nip down to your local Volvo garage, the nearest one I can think of is in Dun Laoghaire, try to get talking to the mechanics, and ask them for advice....

But then again, I keep forgetting you are a VERY busy guy who dosn't have the time to use a bit common sense, but rather go on like a stuck record on boards

Unkel, My dad knows the owner of Koping and he said over 5k (He was not even sure himself) which is just too much and a waste really.

Sounds like its beyond economic repair if its that much.

What if the car needs a new clutch as well? Could well add another 300-400€ to the price.

Why a new clutch the only problem is the Camshaft is frozen which means a new engine. Its got a full service history from Koping and was last serviced around june.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,351 ✭✭✭alias no.9

If it's only the cam shaft, it might be cheaper to just replace the head. You might find an engine with the bottom end gone. You'd be very silly not to change the clutch when the engine is out, expecially on a 7/8 year old car. It'll cost a little extra now but nothing compared to the cost of changing it once everything's been put back together.

Actually just talking to a guy on another forum who's a mechanic, say's a job like that could be done quite handy if he was keeping original ECU etc and it was only the block that was being changed. He's in Dub too... pitty dre has me on ignore :D

    Oh well not to worry

No one will fit an engine for €500. My local mechanic charges €300 labour to do a clutch, and I reckon that is extremely cheap.

300 for a clutch thats abit expensive as i got a full service inc clutch, brake pads, brake discs, clutch box just labour was 300 (a few months ago) and that was off a top ford mechanic with 15yrs experience so it was not a ****ty mechanic.
Im going to ask him about the engine tommorrow but i doubt he can do it as i dont think he will have the engine lift etc.
