I'm on the hunt for a tripod for my D40x and was wondering does anyone have any suggestions.
I've heard of Manfrotto tripods and heads but they seem very expensive for my needs.
I had also been looking at 7Dayshops own brand tripod but it seems to good to be true kinda thing and I don't want to cheap out on this either.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

what do you want a tripod for? will you be mounting a 400mm f4 monster on it? if not my personal experience has been that a *very* cheap tripod will do the job (except in very windy conditions)...

my tripod that I use with my D40 costs €6 (not joking!) and comes with all the features that I need... and it's cheap enough to dispose of if I ever need to upgrade.

so for these light camera/light lens combos I suggest going for a cheap no-name brand. I don't see a difference in quality and justifies the cost of a giotto or manfrotto

Fair points, I'm planning on travelling next year and I just want something a bit robust that'll take a bit of knocking around but I guess the 7Dayshop one's looking like a winner now alright! Might even buy one in a *shudder* Brick 'N' Mortar shop...

I remember reading Thom Hogan writing about tripods - the best one is a 100kg block of concrete - anything less is a compromise ;)

Oh I've travelled with my tripod to China and Japan - it's had its knocks but is still performing admirably.

With some tripods you can attach counter-weights on the bottom to give it added stability (just stick your camera bag onto it for a few extra kilogrammes).
