Connecting Amp to Sky+ and DVD via TV

Hope that someone out there can help me.

I have a Philips 42PF9730/10, Sony STR-DA1200ES AV Amp, Sony DVD player with HDMI interface and a Sky+ box.

The Sky+ box is connected to the TV using SCART connection for Video and I have connected the Optical Audio output (via converter) to the COAX digital input on the TV. This is necessary to sync the audio and video. The TV has a Digital COAX audio output that is connected to the SONY AV amp. This all works great and when viewing Sky Movies with DD sound I get the blue light on the sony amp to come on thus indicating that the sound is 5.1.

I have however connected the DVD player to the TV using HDMI. For some reason the Blue light on the Sony AV amp does not come on when viewing a movies that has 5.1 sound track. The sound is coming out of the amp ok, but no indication that it is 5.1.

Is there a difference in the way the AMP is decodeing the 5.1 directly over HDMI as opposed to DVB on the Sky+ box. I have tried every setting on the AMP but to no avail.

    Thanks.

chances are that the tv cant pass the 5.1 audio from HDMI through the digital coax. i have come across a few that dont before..

best way is to connect the dvd audio the amp directly
