Dell precision M2300 Vs XPS M1330

    Hi

I am in the market for a new laptop with a budget of 1800-2000 and was gonna settle on DELL to simplify things as regards choosing. I was looking for good performance in a nit too large package.

I had settled on the XPS 1330 as a high performer that was mobile too. Unfortunately you can only get the XPS with VISTA. But having read up more and more on windows VISTA I am more coming to the opinion that the performance gains that I can get with a new laptop with duo processor and plenty of RAM will be sucked up by the juice heavy windows VISTA and thus the gains I will get from a new laptop will be minimal.

The other DELL option that seems to fit would be the Precision M2300 which is high on performance and doesnt seem to big and can be bought with XP.

What are peoples opinions here on this? Am I wrong about my fears of getting windows VISTA? And has anyone any opinions on the Dell precision M2300 or any other suggestions? Are there any other DELLS with the performance and portability of the XPS but which can be got with XP? I had thought of getting the XPS with VISTA and downgrading to XP but there seems to be some issues with drivers when you do this.

    Thanks everyone!

You're going to have to upgrade to vista sooner or later so you may as well go with it now. Vista is fine if you have a good spec laptop. The main problem is with people with 512MB ram and a celeron processor.

I am not so sure that I HAVE to upgrade to Vista, not being smart. The apps I use such as stats packages and digital editing I have at present and from what I have read, XP outperforms VISTA on a number of relevant tests for me. Thats what I am thinking you see.

Plus if you compare the minimum, capable and recommended section on dell website for requirements of a laptop to run VISTA, the recommended is 2gb ram, with 256mb graphics.

Thus the fast XPS I get aint gonna be that fast with VISTA.

the main difference between the xps and the presision is the video card the on on the xps is suited for gaming whereas the one on the precision would be more suited to CAD and video work . i had the same delimea about a year ago and decided seeing as it was for work the xps was a bit too flashy :)

So you got the precision then?

Is the 14 inch fairly portable?

The M2300 has only been out for a few weeks. The 14.1 Latitude (similar chassis) are pretty portable.

If you're doing digital editing, you might want to make sure that the graphics card on the M2300 is OK for your needs.

I got Vista with my M1330 and it works fine. I had to get a new copy of two of the main software packages I use, but it was all on the work tab so it wasn't a big deal.

If it makes your choice any easier, XP runs perfectly well on the m1330. All the drivers are on Dell's website. You do need to buy a copy of XP though, so it will add a few pounds to the price.
