A small thing that represents society today

This is something very small, but I can't help to think how it is a smaller scale of what is happening in society today.

Plastic bags. They used to be sturdier. Since we have to pay for them, they are made thinner, and break easy. Is it not the payment that is the effort to curb waste problem? Why do we have to pay as well as having the quality degraded.

I think it represents how we are being ripped off, paying more as quality decreases. And don't say they are thinner for environmental purposes. That is only a scape goat for the government to introduce a new tax. From the same government who builds a massive incinerator, and then praises their environmental record, when in fact, we are the third worst poluting country in Europe.

And the bad thing is we don't care. I too will walk into the shop tomorrow and buy another one.

So what is the point of complaining? Even, what is the point of this thread? What is the point to life, when we know we are being walked on, but follow suit anyway?

You are not 'paying' for the bag. You are being charged a tax for deciding you want to use the bag.
The store is paying for the bag and passing it on to you is a charge to them, taking from their margin, hence one of the reasons that they are made as cheaply as possible...

Buy a couple of the thicker bags and reuse them when you go to the shop and then there'll be no problem.

Its a tax to try and discourage you from using them.
Get one of them cloth "bags for life". Problems solved, and you never have to worry about your Bud cans going thru the bottom.

I thought this thread was about excessively thin plastic bags, not Stalinism?

Actually incinerators aren't that bad for the environment as long as all the recyclables and toxic materials are removed. Also the heat produced can be put into the electricity grid. This is the same as using a power plant except we are getting rid of waste instead of oil, gas or coal.

Here is something else regarding plastic bags that really bothers me. Why do Dublin City Council see fit to use plastic bags as bin liners in litter bins when the rest of us are being discouraged from using them. I can understand using a bin liner keeps the litter bins free of chewing gum and other such goo but take note the next time you see the litter bins being serviced. I guarantee you that the bin liner will not even be half full. What is the world coming to? We're all doomed. If Dublin City Council keep going soon the plastic bag as we know it will be extinct...oh and especially for Outer Bongolia here be fortycoats http://blogorrah.com/FORTYCOATS.jpg

I hate that, when you pull the bag out of the bin and shake it up it's only half full. I don't hate Fortycoats.

The shop attendants stopped helping you fill them aswell when you started paying for them

As we all know, we here at AH are all about finding practical solutions for practical problems.

So how about this , pay 20cents and get a good quality plastic bag. Everyones happy (including mother nature aka Bertie).

Thats actually true. Most crisps have gotten worse. I remember buying a packet of monster munch lately, eating them and being severely disappointed by the taste.

The worlds gone too health conscious now. Also, has anyone noticed that the Dime bars are now called Daim bars and don't taste anywhere near as nice anymore.

Yes, these are widely available now and super-strong. The cloth ones are even sturdier. I really don't think that the OP's complaint is valid.

I think they should put a levy on plastic water bottles next and encourage people to fill up reusable containers instead. Are ya reading this thread, John Gormley? :-p

Seconded. Apparently they were rebranded so they'd be the same as everywhere else. Used to love a good old Dime bar.

Thats what happens when the hippies in Brussels make them take all the Cancer and other diseases out of food that used to be good years ago.

Dont interrupt with your "facts" when someone is in the middle of an unfounded rant.

I hate when they fill the bags. they just lump everything in together with no regard for the fact that you might have hot and cold things togethe ror bread rolls getting squashed to bits.

Think thats for the benifit of the Yaropeans. Like the whole Jif ----> Cif debacle.

Bit harsh on the drinks companies (or the consumer as it'll be passed on) because theres not realy an alternative for the companies to sell millions of drinks in. I doubtthey'd be able to just tax plastic water bottles. The tax would have to cover all soft drinks.

Your not paying for the bag the business is, hence why some businesses give you cheap ones. It is an environmental tax as every cent made from the tax is put into envoirnmental projects aswell as discouraging excessive use in the first place

Simple- bring your own bag. I hate plastic bags. Paper or cloth. Depends whether its for the bin or shopping.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,350 ✭✭✭WexCan

The bag tax is doing quite well methinks - moved to the UK last year and every time I go shopping they smother me with plastic bags. I've started bringing my collection of "bags for life" with me now because I know I'll just end up wasting the plastic ones they give me.

Would be interesting to see how a bag tax would do over here but the UK government seems to love imposing environment-related taxes and not putting a penny from the proceeds towards environmental projects.
