I was looking at the newer models of the tvixbox with h264 support and considering picking one up and was wondering is it any good?

It seems to be the best thing around. The only complaints I've seen posted about them are regarding Beta firmwares, once the firmware is updated everybody seems to be a happy bunny. My one reservation is the price, the European consumers are ripped off by comparison to those in the U.S. and Asia.

I'll be holding out for reviews of the M-6500A model before making a purchase. It's release has been put back from the end of this month to the end of January in an effort to have a more stable product. Presumably that will mean the initial release won't have a beta firmware as happened with the M-5130 release in Australia a few months back.

    TVIX M-6500A - £319.00

    Which model do you have?

These work fine , for what they are , but you have to remember that it is essentially a hard drive with connectors and player electronics built on , and the player electronics are not exactly the best in the world.

    http://www.kjglobal.co.uk/acatalog/TVIX_M-6500A.html

This particular model , is 319 sterling ( about €450 ) without a hard drive , so for nearly 500 euros all your getting is a glorified hard drive enclosure ,

Add the hard drive and your up to nearly 600 euro , you can build a very decent HTPC for that and the htpc will do way way more and do it better, or even a PS3/xbox 360 , which will do almost anything this thing can do.

These boxs are not just divx players they can do so much more. Have a look at www.mpcclub.com

I know what they can do , I see the spec list on the site ,

Its still a lot of money for that , 600 euros for a box that plays back any type of media file , most consoles can do that , and a pc obviously is not limited at all in playing back files.

I would have expected these boxes to be a lot cheaper , at least about 50% of what they are asking. Why would anyone spend 600 euros on this when you can do so much better for the money?

That's my problem, it's considered expensive in other markets and in Europe the price is ridiculous compared to those other markets.

    e.g. TVIX M-5100SH:
    Europe: €419
    UK: £295 / €425
    US: $435 / €297
TVIX M-5130SH only available in Australia - same kit but with integrated DVB-T tuner which is sold seperately for about €110 in Europe.
    Australia: $585AUD / €348
