Anyone know what is the timetable of events for the Open Day this Wednesday in TCD? As in, what time the different talks are on and stuff like that? I know's it's starting at 9am(which is too early for country people-I have to get a 6 o' clock train but that's another story!) and ending at 3pm, but does anyone have any other information?

    Thanks.

I'll be working at it - they're giving us a talk on Monday so I'll let you know what's going on where...

any specific subjects you're interested in?

Whoops, I'm sorry. That was quite amateur of me. Honestly I looked up that website and I couldn't find anything.

Sorry about that. Thanks very much for the link anyway, I appreciate it.

    I'll keep that in mind...

Pure French? Not TSM (two-subject moderatorships)?

Remember, it's not possible to study pure French in Trinity: you must combine it with something else.

Right, well, beside CSLF, you can read French in the following degrees:
    • Law and French
    • Business Studies and French
    • European Studies
    • French and Drama Studies
    • French and Classical Civilisation
    • French and Religions & Theology
    • French and Ancient History & Archaeology
    • French and English Literature
    • French and Film Studies
    • French and History
    • French and German
    • French and History of Art & Architecture
    • French and Italian
    • French and Jewish Studies
    • French and Latin
    • French and Mathematics
    • French and Modern Irish
    • French and Music
    • French and Philosophy
    • French and Psychology
    • French and Russian
    • French and Sociology
    • French and Spanish & Portuguese
Within Engineering, there is also the option of taking an Irish-French double qualification. Many courses, notably Business, Economic and Social Studies Common Entry allow for the study of French to second-year level, after which a student receives a Trinity Certificate in Language Proficiency.

I get the feeling that the OP is more interested in the CS side of things. The Centre for Language and Communications Studies also offer this option to members of the Engineering faculty, which should include CS. This course is done outside of normal coursework hours and can continue for two years.

Many students choose this option, particularly when not given the opportunity to otherwise study a language.

Didn't know that - thanks for the correction. So pure languages cannot be studied by themselves in Trinity?

Apart from English, though that's different. You could study French and Spanish, Russian and Irish. I'd consider a person doing them to be studying pure languages. I imagine you'd usually be majoring in one and minoring in the other, though as a science boy I'm not sure on the intricacies.

German and Irish can be studied on their own within the contexts of the degrees in Germanic Languages and in Early and Modern Irish.

Germanic Languages covers a range of languages.

True: I wasn't very clear in what I said above! For the degree years, it's possible to take courses only in German and Dutch, if you don't want to take Swedish. A friend of mine does the course, so I hear bits about it. He's a JS (Fresher translation: third year) and I thought he said he was only taking German next year, but, according to the Calendar (Fresher translation: College regulations), that seems to be impossible. I do know, however, that rather enjoys the course.

Is it possible to study Swedish and (Food) Science together?

The talks that are advertised to go on for half an hour will actually last twenty-five minutes. Any talks advertised for an hour will last forty minutes. That's what the Admissions Office guy told us today.

Really looking forward to the open day tomorrow. I have my heart set on computer science, but it'd be interesting to look at similar courses to put down as other preferences on CAO.

Seems like we'll just giving directions for the most part and dealing with crowd control, also general information about Trinity life - sports, societies and dare I say it some lectures? ;) ... been told specifically not to answer admissions queries as we might get it wrong.

However if anyone wanted to talk about law I'm happy to get my perspective.

Of what? I'll quite happily stand and point at computers if you want!

Conzymaher - there should be a load of CS guys there from various years - myself and a couple of mates of mine run the comp sci society in trinity and john, one of the guys, was working hard to get as many people involved as possible.

And don't be put off if you end up talking to anyone boring - its a good course :D

That was tiresome. Wannabe-BESS students FTL. David McWilliams costing me money FTL.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭shay_562

...how did McWilliams cost you money? I know he's a twat in general, but has he delved as far as personal theft now?

And hush - many of us were wannabe BESS-heads back in the day, asking stupid questions about the course and generally being wreck-the-heads. And many of us turned out just fine!

I was working at the Front Square information stand: it was great fun! :)

He was ill and Prof. Antoin Éanna Murphy FTCD ushered me off to get him a bottle of water.

I was a wannabe BESS-head back in the day, too. And I asked stupid questions, I'm sure (I have no memory so I wouldn't remember if I did or not.) But I didn't f*cking climb over chairs and push past barriers to get into a lecture hall that has a perfectly functional queue outside it.

Very impressed with the Lloyd building / comp science facilities, and the Havok / physics lecture was great.

See y'all next year hopefully :)

Nope, just boring old plain Computer Science :P

Was never good at the languages....

I was really happy with the open day today. I liked the Havok talk (although I heard a shorter version during a transition year thing 2 years ago). Slightly disappointed that there was no talk about the Computer Science course itself.
