First thing first - I know very little about these things so go easy on me.

I ordered a wireless broadband ADSL router from BTIreland which I have now received but am I right in saying that I will need some sort of a "receiver" also. Its just the router thats in the box together with a couple of micro filters

    Thanks in advance

Most new PCs and laptops have wireless receivers built in. As long as the receiver is active it should 'see' your new router straight away.

Thanks Ian. My PC is about 3 years old. Its a Dell Dimension 5000. Would you have any idea if it would have a wireless receiver or how would I check this myself?

In that case it may not be wireless enabled.

    Check by following this route...

Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.

You might see a wireless device under 'Network Adapters'. If not you can buy a wireless card or USB receiver handy enough.

The only thing I see listed there is - Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller which i think may have something to do with the fax although Im only guessing as I thought I seen this before somewhere.

I take it that a USB receiver would be my best option as it just involves inserting in the slot. Are they all standard/compatible with the wireless routers or is there is a special type I should get?

The guy in BT sales was to send both with the modem costing €45 and the same for the receiver. I thought that was a bit high for the receiver but then again I wouldnt be too familiar with this type of thing.

Im going into Derry tomorrow so I should be able to pick one up in PC world but I take it I will need to have the spec of the router with me.

Are you sure it's just a Router? or is it a Modem/Router?

If it's a Router only you will need to connect it to a Modem too.

The Broadcom controller device manager shows would probably be a cat5 port (wired networking)

connect the router to your computer by network cable (or usb, if it has a usb connection on the router). You can buy a wireless receiver card or usb dongle if you want to connect wirelessly.
