German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen has died at the age of 79.

Born in Modrath, near Cologne, the prolific musician wrote more than 200 works from orchestral pieces to pure electronic music during his career.

He also appeared on the cover of The Beatles' Sergeant Pepper album - with Paul McCartney one of his numerous fans in the world of rock and pop.

The composer died in Kurten, western Germany, on Wednesday, the Stockhausen Foundation announced in a statement.

    Mike.

Wow, thats mad, first I'd heard of it... I can't say I was a huge fan of his work, maybe I just didn't get it, but still, respect and RIP.

I got told this in the pub last night... naturally, we all went home and tearfully sang "Gesang der Junglinge" in memoriam...

RIP indeed. I can't say I liked everything he did or even most of what he did but he was by far and away a visionary.
