xubuntu installation query (noob)

I've been installing xubuntu 7.10 on an old machine, using the alternate CD (text-based installer).

Anyway, my machine already had 2 partitions, C at about 6gb (Win98) and D with about 2.6Gb (blank).

One of the options during the xubuntu install process is to resize partitions. So I figured i'd reduce the C by a Gb, hoping to free up some space for D where im going to put xubuntu.

Except it's been whirring away now for ages, still showing progress at '0% resizing partition...' Possibly nearly an hour now with no change. I can hear the hard-drive whirr away but nothings changing on screen.

    My question is:
How long should it normally take? Should I just leave it there for another while, or turn it off?

It really can take a while. If you cancel it, things might not be pretty afterwards.

The experts recommend defragging any Windows partition before resizing it.

Thanks for the reply. It was taking too long so I turned it off. I'll give the installation another bash.

Definitely defrag it - there could be bits of windows all over your partition. Ubuntu might have a problem with resizing it. It really should only take a couple of minutes to resize a partition - I should know, I do it twice a week with ubuntu

I had defragged it beforehand allright. Im not sure if the partition was working or not...but I got bored of looking at 0% so I turned it off and started the install again. I can't remember if I altered any partitions the second time around, but I got it installed in the end anyhow. I don't think there was any major damage caused by turning it off, Win98 still boots up as normal.
    Thanks for the advice.
