first rig: Athlon 2400XP rig (2002)

Started off with a GF4200 64mb, this dies after 6 months.

Was swiftly replaced with a GF2 pro 64MB from the bargain bucket of PC in mint condition for 40 quid.

Eventually replaced with a Radeon 9800 128MB non pro. (2003)

2nd rig: Build an AMD 64 shuttle box and retained the radeon 9800.

Eventually replaced the 9800 with an X800XT PE around late 2004 to early 2005 (I think)

Present Rig: got a 8800GTS 320mb in August. Will see after Xmas if there is any sort of dacent jump in graphics cards, if not will drag the life out of it for another 6 months or so.

    1997-2001 Jaton video card, 1MB
    2002-2006 nVidia GeForce 2 MX 400 64MB AGP
    2006-Present nVidia GeForce 6800GB 256MB Pci-Ex16.

Not planning to upgrade it any time soon because I've yet to throw anyting at my 6800GS that it couldn't handle in its sleep, everything from old games to newer stuff like FarCry and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. all running nicely on my old LCD monitor @1024*768. If I end up with bundles of spare cash I may go the whole hog and build a new machine with quad-core processor, 8800GT or some of the newer ATI stuff, 1280*1024 monitor, Windows Vista etc, but I have no short term plans to do that.

All in the order I've used them in a main desktop machine, and not including spare parts used in old PCs etc..used plenty of Fx5200's, 9600's, 9800's, etc in between main machines in older agp builds as well, and I've probably forgotten a few.....not to mention I've gone through a few Laptop cards too, Rage Mobility 16mb, Radeon X200, Go6400, Go7400, current Go8600GT...

Can't remember what used prior to 1998, some 2mb junk
    TNT (1998-ish)
    TNT2 (1999-2001)
    Geforce 2 MX (2001-2002)
    Geforce 4 MX (2002-2004)
    X800SE (2004)
    X800 (2004-2006)
    7600GT (2006)
    7600GS (2006)
    X800Pro (2006)
    X1950Pro (2006)
    6200 (2006)
    7900GS (2006)
Geforce 4 MX PCI (few days....horrific experience)
    X1800XT (2007-current)
    X300 (2007)
    8400GS (2007)
    8800GTS (2007)

On just my main machine, and beginning with 1995 and a Pentium 75mhz (before that it was generic ISA/PCI VGA card):

OnBoard (can't remember the name, but I still remember being surprised to see it support in directx with it's own dll)
Tseng ET6000 (excellent 2D card, ran for many many years in this capacity)
Matrox Mystique (not as good 2D, but ran Tomb Raider 2 in 3D brilliantly)
Matrox G200 (first AGP card with a Pentium II 266mhz)
    TNT
    TNT2 Ultra
    Geforce 2 GTS
Geforce 2 Pro (almost forgot this one)
    Geforce 3 Ti 200
    Geforce 4 Ti 4600
    Radeon 9800XT
    Geforce 6800 Ultra AGP
    Geforce 6800 Ultra PCI-E
    Radeon X1800XT
    Geforce 8800GTS 640mb

I've pretty much been on the cutting edge all the way through (had my 8800GTS for over a year), my next card will likely be a Geforce 9, unless ATI/AMD get the finger out and don't go multi-GPU on one board (why ffs!?!).

Wow.. how did you chew through that lot havoc especially the 7600GT and 7600GS as they were so close... God I hope to not waste any more money on anymore 3D cards for awhile! Although I'm sure my 7600GT will be begging for an upgrade before long. The 8800GTS being especially tasty! :)

Yeah, I remember moving the view to stare a flickering red light or swirling effect and thinking that adds atmosphere! Funny I remember being relieved when I completed Quake2 and didn't ever play it again. I think I was Strogged-tired after so many levels of them. But, yep it was the first game I remember getting a hold of that was made with 3D acceleration in mind. Unreal was the next one with that Nali castle title screen (using that Creative Voodoo 2 12mb) . :)

    Nvidia Riva (around 1998)
    Voodoo 1 4mb
    Voodoo 2 8mb
    Geforce 1 32mb
    Geforce 4 4600ti, 128mb
    ATI X300, 128mb
    Geforce 8800GTX, 768mb

my favourite 3d card moment was running the opening sequence of Unreal 1 for the first time the week it came out, seeing that castle and all the reflective textures/lighting.

    Matrox G200 8Meg (~1997) [expanded to 16Meg later on]
    Voodoo 5 5500 64Meg (1999)
    Geforce 4400 ti 128Meg (2002)
    Geforce 7800 GT 256Meg (2005)

    ??? (2008)

Currently holding off on new machine / graphics until I see Nvidia's PCI-E 2.0 offerings. But I've already bought Crysis, and don't wanna play it till I have a machine worthy of it.
