Im thinking about buying a cooling fan for the ps3 off of ebay. Whats the story with them? I hear that they can help make ur ps3 last alot longer.True/False

If they are a good idea, just to let ye all know, they're on ebay for a tenner including shipping....Not too shabby.

Waste of money. PS3 doesn't need them.

IIRC, similar coolers for 360 were actually doing them more harm than good.

No not needed. PS3 has excellent fan and heatsink setup as it is.

That's interesting. Would have thought the opposite given that the vertical position should leave the vents more exposed.

I keep mine vertically, only gets warm around the top exhaust, and even then, my LCD display gets warmer!

The reason because the top exchange fan gets hoter is because heat rises quicker than cold air. But hose fans are not needed at all.

Maybe if you were in a very hot country during a heat wave then you may need one.

OMG that link is crazy!!it cant possibly be true!
If I stand it up and use a fan maybe it would be fine?Cuz i bought a vertical stand for the extra USB ports.
Well what im hearing here is that fans arent needed and thats fair enough, but can they really damage your playstation.my brother's been using one the whole time!

Well, different models of coolers are different. But I heard about some on 360s doing more harm than good.

On PS3, you don't need them. I wouldn't use them.

Ok cool ill just leave it so.
Whats with all the reports though of the ps3 ''overheating light'' appearing?
If you click on the link above there are posts at the bottom of people complaining about ps3's overheating.

i have one...when o bought my PS3(was a 2nd hand one) the previous owner had kept the USB cord, went back to GAME, was told that id have to buy it so, got home and realised was the same as my MP3 player one so brought it back and just got the fan in exchange, it can only be good for the console anyway!!

it can only be good for the console anyway!!

That's what the people who bought the xbox coolers thought...

Remember, any problems caused by 3rd party peripherals are not covered by your warranty. A ps3 in perfect nick doesn't need a cooler.

Not the case , these cooling fans draw power from the unit causing the console to work harder and create more heat , so the fan is only creating more of a problem.

The Ps3 doesnt need one anyway , the 360 has an overheating problem which shows when the console is working hard , adding the fan draws more current , which makes more heat , thus making the console hotter and adding to the problem.

The link that shows the thermal images is bogus , a Thermal imager or IR scan as its sometimes called is set to show red at any temp you require , note the high temps on the scan , less than 40 degrees and well within the operating range of most processor based equipment.

Most PC's and consoles will run at around 40 degrees , thats perfectly normal , and you wont be looking at anything you might call a problem until it hits around 60.

Those fans are a complete waste of money. As has been said by everyone elso who posted here, the PS3 does not need cooling fans. Spend the money on a game or blu ray movie instead.
