You can change the privacy settings on your Wordpress blog (Go to Dashboard > Options > Privacy). The options there are to a) have it fully public, b) not to have the blog show up in search engines but to allow normal visitors or c) make the blog only accessible to users that you choose.

It doesn't say anything about making it password protected but it might be worth posting a question in the Wordpress forums to find out for definite. The forums there are great, v quick responses and usually very helpful.

^ Agreed, if your blogs.ie blog doesnt allow this then maybe look into having a blog on wordpress.com which gives you all the features of wordpress including the one above.
