Passport expiration for travel to US

Ok, I'm sorry to ask something that's probably asked regularly, but I've read back some of the older threads, and looked at the US Embassy website, and it all seems very ambiguous.

Can anyone tell me for *definite* if you no longer need a passport valid for 6 months from the point of departure from the US, in order to enter the US? My mother and I are going to New York at the weekend, and have only just realised that her passport expires in mid-April. Trying to get a new passport tomorrow would be a major, major headache for her, as she's not young.

If someone tells me for definite that you *do* need a passport valid for 6 months after departure, well then she'll change it, 'cos she has to, but I really don't want her to have to go to that hassle if it's not 100% necessary.
