aussie rules, whats your thoughts on it? is it good or bad for the gaa?

personally i think the afl has the gaa in a stranglehold, mayo gaa had a very good young player coming through.people were saying he would replace ciaran mcdonald.
Then he played in the under 21 final got spotted by an australian scout and now one of mayos finest young prospects is in sydney.
Its a great move for him but a blow to mayo's hopes winning an all ireland some day

Its the way it goes. AFL is bad for GAA but so is Soccer and Rugby altho we dont hear about the players leaving GAA to play that. AFL look for players specifically from GAA so it seems like we are losing most to them but in reality we lose to others too and gain from some also. Plus, after going to a few AFL games in OZ, it really is a boring sport. I would watch it on TV and enjoy it, but if your there for the whole game, its all about the drink! :D

Howya! Yeah his name is pearce Hanley and he actually got spotted while the Ireland U-17 team were over there playing international rules and this series has now been scrapped! Its the right move though because we should never have been showcasing our young talents under their noses. However cant blame anyone for going! Id be gone in a shot, currently after havinga fitness trainin and were trainin over the christmas:( Would be gone like a shot if i was offered the chance

Seriously bad for Mayo that Pierse is gone. Our hottest prospect by far. Can't blame him but something has to be done to try and encourage players to stay here. Young lads at 18-21 will go for the adventure not to mind the money.

actualy mayo had a good player called gavin duffy but now he's off playing rugby for connacht so it seems quite a few sports can take advantage of the amateur sport we all know and love

Exactly. Its the main downfall of the amateur status. Player is hugely talented, fighting fit and good at a number of sports. Plays GAA but is offered a large contract from AFL/rugby/Soccer etc, very few will turn that down. Declan O Mahony for Dublin was offered a trial for an AFL club (Richmond i think) and turned it down but he is one of the very few that has id say.

Kevmy, agree with you also but what could be done apart from giving players a regular wage to play? The GAA, unless it turns pro will not be able to compete with the other pro sports when it comes to keeping players in my mind and i would hate to see it turn fully professional.

You think? I'd be of the opposite opinion. The high flying marks are sensational and it's a rule the GAA should learn to adopt rather than having midfielders punished for holding the ball on the ground after falling from a grab over three other players.

On topic, there's not a lot the GAA can do. The players are offered good money, a good lifestyle and above all, professionalism. Playing out here for 7 or 8 years can set a guy up for life. Why wouldn't they come out?

Back off topic......support the bid for a forum please! Between AFL fans and GAA fans on here there'd be plenty for discussion. Link in my sig.

ya but for every tadhg kennelly/gavin duffy there is 20-30 fellas who dont make it. if u take the lads who havent made it in aus, when they come back
    1. they have experience of preparing and playing in a professional setting-which can only benifit the gaa
    2. they have done the whole australia thing so its out of the system-look at paul galvin and declan o sullivan this year for kerry after the few months in aus

I honestly dont like the mark rule. You can see some amazing marks but it veers the game towards the too stop/start mark at times i feel. Quite often its mark taken, play continues quick, but i always got more into the game when it moves faster without marks. Dont get me wrong, a good close AFL game can be great, i really enjoyed the final last year and also the game i went to was Melbourne V Western Bulldogs and as far as i recall it was a nothing game and the Bulldogs won easily so prob not the best to go by, but i just think the games come accross alot better on TV than they do when sitting in the stadium. On a side note, the Telstra Dome and MCG are bloody amazing stadiums!

And scaramanga, i think that was the main thing that kept Dec O Mahony from going. He was on the verge of a Dublin place, still very young and decided the risk of it going wrong in Oz was too great.

I think someone needs to take a little run over to 'forums' and lend their support....We could use your informed kind!

I get your point about the mark alright. What if it was for contested marks only? As in high balls, not when some lad is closing you down from twenty metres away?

Absolutely, id support an AFL forum. Ill pop over after this message. For contested marks it could definately work better i think. Instead of constantly finding a free man as that does slow it down alot. Also, i thought the accuracy of kicking in AFL was abismal until i actually kicked an AFL ball. I thought it would be similar to a rugby ball but jesus, its alot harder! Slightest misjudgement and the bloody thing goes about 20 yards wide!

Yeah I found the same thing. The technique is quite diffiuclt to master. You gotta kick straight through the ball with the laces. Anywhere off centre and it's a wobbler. Some of kicking has serious skill involved.

ya thats why tadgh is highly rated over there , his stats for completed passes is unreal.
mind you i remember when he signed for the swans first they sent over a ball for him to practice . lets just say he has improved a bit since;)

i agree it would be a move in the wrong direction.Playing for the love of your county would be a thing of the past, also smaller countys such as offaly whom have had sucess in the past would never suceed again as the bigger county boards would have more money.e.g Cork GAA would have more money than Carlow GAA.
The GAA will need to find some way to keep our players here so that the sport can keep expanding.

An AFL fourm would go down well i'd say,you should give it a bash!

The slagging off of Aussie Rules is only sour grapes. Let's face it, it's a much better game that Gaelic, because it has specifed rules of tackling, unlike the "you can/you cann't" 'iterpretation' of a tackle in Gaelic. Sour grapes lads.

I wouldn't agree that its a better sport,in my opinion GAA is,but thats not to say AFL is a bad sport either

No,I won't face it.Thats your viewpoint not mine.

I'd support the proposed forum in question for AFL but lets not turn this into a GAA v AFL argument. Its pointless.
