I went into Dublin Camera Exchange today in search of a macro lens which I needed urgently.

On the way into the shop I noticed an old micro Nikkor 55mm second hand in the window. As this was €179 compared to the €350 I thought I would have to pay for the Tokina 100mm I asked the assistant if the older lens would fit my D80. He said that it wouldn't. I knew that the AF wouldn't work but when he said that I assumed it wouldn't fit at all. So I asked for the Tokina. They didn't have it in stock but said that they could get from their other branch if I could come back in 20 minutes. When I returned to the shop I walked in to see another customer talking to a different assistant with the second hand lens fitted to her D40! As she then purchased the lens I had no choice but to buy the Tokina which was twice the price.

Obviously, I have a 100mm macro lens that AF's rather than a 55mm that doesn't, but it was the salesman's stupidity and lack of basic knowledge about his own job that forced me to spend an extra €170.

I pointed this out to another more senior staff member but no offer of any discount or other bonus was made other than that he 'would have a word' with the relevant idiot.

Needless to say, it will be a cold day in hell before I buy anything in that shop again.

I wouldn't be a big fan of the Camera Exchange. I've had some grand staff in there, but some awful one's too.

The day they tried to charge me about 60 quid for four rolls of C41 35mm film developed, and a contact sheet made for each, after it being 14 quid the day before, really put me off.

    They've never seen me wrong.
Good service, no hard sale, competitive prices.
I demand good service & almost always get what I want!

I've gotten some mis-information in that shop too... Conn's wasn't much better (in terms of pre-AI or AIS lenses fitting on a D40).

which one is camera exchange again?

Had numerous problem getting films developed from a shop downstairs in the Blanch centre. They printed doubles of stuff I wanted singles of and singles of the ones I wanted doubles of - miraculously the guy I dealt with messed this up twice! I imagine its quite a pleasant job but I seriously could not believe their nonchalant attitude when I queried what was going on.

Second horror story from last Christmas I was buying a lense for my girly from the camera shop just from Tara Street, Dublin on the quays. Sorry cant remember the name.

An elderly gentlemen seemed quite keen to get me to purchase the lens and get me out the door as quick as possible. That night when I got home I double checked the price of the lens on their website and it was 30euro cheaper there. If he hadnt have been trying to get me to buy it so ardently I dont think I would have suspected anything. Went back in the next day and a younger gentleman (possibly his son), refunded me the money and said that the original guy I had been dealing with didnt know what he was talking about. I got my money back but it soured my experience of a place I had been recommend.

I haven't bought a single thing from either shop again and to be honest I dont think I will. No one likes feeling took advantage of but regretably some of us newbies arent getting the customer service we should - its not like camera related stuff here is cheap.

Had problems with Camera Exchange when i wanted a R72 IR filter and the old guy tried to sell me a way over priced hama red filter saying it dose the exact same job on digital.

Tried to explain and they were having none of it so bought it in conns.

If you want a straight answer ask for Brian he's most of the time in the Georges st branch.
