New Green Tax for Almost Classic

I'm sure people are getting the news of the new green taxes on cars.

My question is I have 1981 3.8ltr Merc which I'm sure the emmissions on are crazy, Its on english plates still although its got classic insurance, the reason being the VRT will be €50 in 4 years time and the classic tax will also come into play, now myself and the father only drive it during the summer on the weekends so we weren't planning on paying the VRT and changing the plates until the Gardai told us to, but now I'm wondering if we wouldn't be better off doing it before the changes happen incase we have to do in the next few years.

My Aunt from England has expressed an interest in lending the car for a few months each year and she has said she could tax it over there but I'm not sure what way that would leave us and what the cost would be?

The new road tax will only effect cars registered after June 08. I would register the car now, that way you just pay a small amount in VRT and stick with the road tax based on CC(still a rip off!). Anyway, I doubt they have emissions tables for cars that old!

re-reg it...you risk getting it seized by Customs otherwise....a clampdown will come eventually...

I think UK tax will need to be looked at so.

Does that include classic cars too? So if I for example import and register a '68 Dodge Charger R/T in 2009, will it go by the new rules of CO2 emissions and all that nonsense?

EDIT: Nevermind, I just read the other thread!

..........I'm not preaching here but thought you should know that it is illegal for a Resident of the Irish Republic to drive a foreign registered vehicle at all, unless under certain company contracts where you do not own the car. You risk having the car seized anyway !!

Can you register it and put it up on blocks until you are able to pay the roadtax car is over 30 years.
Is it possible to tax for summer months only - put it up on blocks for the winter months?

Oh yea I can tax it for 3 months and get the gardai to sign a form that says it off the road for the rest.

.........thats what I'd do, because you wont be driving it very much !!:D

Just get it VRT'd before the new regime kicks in !!

If the car is UK registered then you should at the very least keep it taxed in the UK or let the UK DVLA know that it is off the road ( scheme is called SORN). If its not taxed or on SORN then the last registered keeper will be getting demands, summons, penalties etc. To have proper insurance it needs to be taxed and MOT'd in the UK.
If the new VRT laws don't apply to 30+ year old vehicles then you could wait the 3-4 years and then import, i doubt if you'll have any problems if you only drive it in the summer. If you import now then you'll have to pay $$$$$$ in road tax for the next 3 years, unless you can get the Gards to write you a letter as described.

I guess the road tax system here doesn't have an equivalent of the SORN system in the UK, a letter from the Gards will do ?

Another, question, does this new VRT system apply to any and all cars registered after Summer 08 or just NEW cars ?
