Alcohol Content - Does This Theory Hold Up?

got a 12 pubs of christmas coming up and I'm trying to figure a way that I can still be standing at the end. is this correct calculation:

if one drinks a pint=568ml of beer which is, say, 4.3% vol. then one takes in
    568 x 0.043 = 24.424 ml of alcohol

if one drinks a shot=37ml (approx) of say kahlua, 27% vol. then one takes in
    37 x 0.27 = 9.99 ml of alcohol

since this is less than half the volume of alcohol consumed in a pint, after 12 pubs you should only feel like you've drank approx 5-6 pints ?

I think there is prolly a hole in this theory somewhere...

Seems perfectly well reasoned to me.

That is how alcohol by volume works.

You are going to drink a shot of Kahlua in every pub instead of a pint?

I think the alcohol in the shots is more "concentrated" or something, and may have a stronger affect, but I'm no expert.

Actually, no - your figures look pretty good, the only part I'm not sure about is how big a shot of Kahlua is.
Health professionals talk in terms of approximate Units of alcohol: a standard shot (25ml) of spirits (40% ABV) is a Unit, so I estimate that 37ml shot of Kahlua is also a Unit. A pint of beer is 2 Units, which matches what you're saying.

ok thanks for the confirmation of my reasoning! as for the amount given in a shot it all really depends on who's serving you but the average shot glass in Ireland I think holds approx 30ml.

don't think I'll be on the Kahlua all night I just used that as an example, we're on a tight schedule with only 15 minutes allowed for first 5 pubs so that's mainly why I'm avoiding pints (too much liquid too fast). i'll prolly stick to malibu / schnapps / kahlua and be able to get up in the morning with me head in one piece

I'd hazard a guess that you'd be in a lot worse way after 12 shots than 6 pints. My reasoning to it is that a pint is consumed over a longish period of time and your body is constantly absorbing the alcohol, whereas with the shot its one concentrated hit of alcohol and its quicker to your bloodstream as a result.

12 shots of a schnapps or other weaker spirit and you should be grand. You could also go for malibu & 7up or something, as diluting it may help?

i completed a 12 pubs of christmas once. and i will never go for all 12 again.
i was seriously mouldy afterwards, so last year i drank in every second pub. it's a fun night out but it's dangerous.

If youre going to do this then I recommend the Kahlua. It has a lowish abv and a lot of sugar in it to keep you going. After 12 shots of whiskey/rum/tequila you might be feeling a wee bit tired.

I am always calculating alcohol contents like this.

The pint is 568ml, yet usually it will be a little short. Guinness is 4.2% I think smithwicks is too.

    Your calcs seem correct.

A shot is 35.5ml. baileys is 50ml, and I think is 17% so 8.5 so probably one of the lowest.

These calculations conversley show how expensive it is to get drunk on some beers. People always comment on my "expensive" erdinger habit. A 500ml bottle is ~5.20 and 5.3%, 26.5ml alcohol.

Also consider longnecks, heineken 4.3% 330ml =14.2ml so normal longnecks work out much dearer than foreign 500ml quality beers, alcohol wise. A poured shot is usually a little shy, of course a measured shot into a long glass could be shy or over poured. If you are a woman the amount you get is directly related to the size of your breasts and how much is on show ;) (in santa ponza we used to send up girls to the sleazy barmen to get our drinks, worked out cheaper to buy the girl hers for free as we all got huge measures too)

Quoted "units" from "health authorities" are commonly wrong. A shot here is 35.5ml, in the UK it is 25ml.

Depends on the shot. Say absolut 40%, 35.5mlx40x12=170.4ml pints 4.3%x568x6=146.5ml

SO in that case definitely more.

Even if alcohol was the same shots are concentrated and absorbed faster. If you drink water along with it they can be similar. Fizzy drinks aid absorption, like champagne.

But if you are on the 12 round thing then you are drinking at the same rate as the pint drinkers. And you are all drinking 12 shots.

    Say 12 baileys, 17%x50mlx12=102ml

    1 pint of erdinger 568mlx5.3%=30.1
so 12 baileys is not even 3.5 pints of erdinger!

If you really want to take it easy simply eat a big spagetti bol beforehand. Food really slows absorption down.
we're on a tight schedule with only 15 minutes allowed for first 5 pubs
LOL, good luck to you. I know serious drinkers who couldnt do that. Doesnt sound too much but is very difficult after the first 2-3. you will do it with shots easy though, pints, no way.
