Dont use NTL...

Just a little warning.
Living in D15m I`ve get NTL in July - for two month my broadband was working 14 h daily... yes, every day around 9-10 am modem was disconnected, tv was still working - everything was going back to normal usually about 8 pm, sometimes 10 pm.
After hundreds of calls finally somebody has fixed it, so I was having bb 24h daily - but I wasnt happy too long.
I`ve checked my ping, and that was a total disaster... and still it is. 4 month passed, and my ping is so unstable, I`m getting huge loss of packets, just check it:

Usually I`m using my bb to play online games (Counter Strike, Lineage 2, my flatmate is playing EVE online) and chat with Skype and other VOIP systems - but with this connection quality is horrible.
4 months - calling 2 times weekly now, I`m sick of this. Can anyone tell me how it looks? Do I need to pay any fees to cancel this broadband? I dont want this anymore,and I am not reccomending this to anyone.
Havent seen worse CS in my life, never ever.

what is your ping result for www.google.com

i get a maximum of 78ms and an average of 38 with 0% lost
that was pinging the website you pinged.

from the looks of your ping its not that bad considering i have seen alot worse(cough clear*wire)

alot of people have problems with ntl but the ping you have i would have to say is good to say the least.

Best not to use Google... they have a lot of different servers in different locations and you won't always get a reply from the same server. www.boards.ie is a better benchmark.

No point comparing to Clearwire either - their service is a type of wireless broadband that does not require line of sight, works through walls and stuff so it is never likely to be good for ping in games.

NTL is a different story entirely - cable should be great for games, and you'll find a lot of NTL users with excellent ping. However, they're notorious for oversubscribing areas. My guess is that if the ping goes consistently downhill in your area, then there's a good chance that it will only continue to get worse until NTL allocate more bandwidth to the area (might not happen). I know a lot of gamers who hate nthell for this reason. Myself, I always played it safe by going with Eircom DSL - more expensive and less bandwidth, but you can rely on 40ms ping 99% of the time.

A lot of the time its down to a couple of users who are heavy downloaders who mess up a node. Often they fix the problem by allocating more bandwidth and the heavy downloaders just use up all the new bandwidth.

I know that they are overloaded, but it`s NTL problem, and they should deal with it. 6 month now I`m just fighting with helpdesk, and I am going crazy. Like I said - I am using my bb to play online games and chat with VOIP - with that connection I am unable to do this. Like now ping is not very bad, but even when it`s low is not stable - always jumping:

But later... Ill post a ping for 3 hours - sometimes I am getting 400 ping and 25% loss to my gateway...

Webpages are working fine, but I dont care, I want to use Voip, I want to play CSS with friends...

So now I am just looking for a proper way to cancel the agreement with NTL and I will try Magnet ADSL.

That stress after 6 months of fighting with NTL will make my life around 5 years shorter
