    Hey Guys,

I was down in my local Dunnes earlier doing a bit of shopping and drooling over some of the HDTVs they have. Namely an LG 42PC55. Anyway I started chatting to a member of staff I know fairly well. He said they’re supposed to be doing a 25% Off everything deal for the weekend, starting tomorrow (Thursday).

Does anyone know anything bout the deal?

    Or The TV?
It’s marked €999, but if the deal is on tomorrow it’ll mean a 42 inch LG HDTV for €750

I saw an ad for that offer earlier and it said "25% off EVERYTHING". It didn't mention any limitations as far as I recall.

    "25% OFF EVERYTHING"

Really? First time i've ever seen a sale advertising "25% OFF EVERYTHING"

For what it's worth.. i know a few of the staff in Dunnes's and stay away from the TV's - they send back pallets of faulty units brought back by customers weekly.

But even at that price I wouldn't mind buying a faulty unit knowing it'd be repaired!

AFAIK, they don't typically repair LCD's as they're far too expensive to repair.

What they would do normally is issue you vouchers to the same value you paid for the TV.. useful for somewhere like Currys (etc). Not so much for Dunnes.

I haven't touched on retail law in a long time, but I was always under the impression that they must offer to a) repair b) replace or c) refund you in cash (i.e. you're not obligated to accept vouchers)

I wouldn't mind a faulty unit either but i'm not lovin the idea of getting €750 worth of vouchers!
The tv in question is an LG 42PC55. I have done a bit of research on it and the reviews say it's fairly good. I'm really just wondering if there'll be better offers when the Jan sales start.
    |.Murderer.| you are dead right there.

Possibly.. as the whole area is patchy to me too but look at your options:

    a) Repair - like i said, they don't typically repair LCD's especially when the screen goes - they replace the panel. Go to Option B so. And would you want it repaired if it's as shoddy as I'm lead to believe? OK.. you can only make up your mind from purchasing it but numerous staff members in Dunnes tell me the same thing.
    b) Replace - a replacement is fair enough if you've had a TV which you know is withstanding and it was a once-off that it failed / broke but if it happens early in it's life, surely you wouldn't want a replacement.
    c) Cash - take the cash i suppose. But I'm some stores will only offer you credit / vouchers.

Again.. not my strongest area. Getting hugely off-topic here so apologies all.

But I'm some stores will only offer you credit / vouchers.

I know some stores will only offer you these or say that it's "store policy" to offer credit on returns, but you are fully entitled to a refund of your money. The retailer must provide goods of merchable quality . A broken tv is not such a good and therefore they are in breach of the contract.

Again, it's been a long time since I looked at this, so I may not be correct.

Also, not really that off-topic. I'd be interested to know if I was buying a bargain TV or setting myself up for a lifetime of grocery shopping in Dunnes :)

Sales of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980

http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/ZZA16Y1980.html seems to be down at the moment, but you would normally find the act there.

They must give you cash if they can't repair or replace. Don't take any cobblers about store credit. Demand to see the store manager and quote him/her the act.

I stand corrected then. Why can't the say "25% off nearly everything" instead of flashing a big red "EVERYTHING" on the screen. Grrrr .

Yep, another one, ladies, mens, kids, home. Not electronics or grocery. Btw, Dunnes give full refunds and exchanges. Exclusions apply-to gifts! They're already on 3 for 2. I work in a Dunnes, really looking forward to a horrible weekend.

Chilly- I think they're covering themselves with the 'exclusions apply' bit. It was much worse last weekend '50% OFF EVERYTHING' only it was actually selected lines....ughh the chaos.

The reason why there's so many sale weekends is because all of the stockrooms are overstocked..

Really ? I heard they had changed their policies on giving full refunds ? They used to give refunds if you didn't like the item or it didn't work. Now is it strictly if something doesn't work ?
I heard of someone bringing back a broken cd player to Dunnes and she had to march around to power points plugging it in an out for various people trying to prove there was a problem without having a cd to hand. They told her it's now policy to be very fastidious about whether a refund is deserved or not. Someone tell me they've changed this

So is there any chance of a heads up if there's another 50% off everything. Now, by "everything" i mean everything, not Dunnes' version of everything!
    Cheers for the input.

Has anyone got any good deals yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 893 ✭✭✭Doodlebug

After a quick scout around I just picked up a pack of 6 mugs for €3.75 after discount and some Egyptian Cotton fitted sheets €15 each after discount. That was my big bargain!

A pity the sale doesn't apply to electronics/TVs!

Pity the sale doesn't include the electronics, as there was 2 LG 42" Plasma's in my local Dunnes, one of which would've fitted nicely in my trolley :)

I used to work in Dunnes - pay is the same as anywhere else and they treat you like a moron, but it's better than Tesco I hear - there they treat you like a moron AND monitor your every move 'cos they assume you are stealing stuff.

Used to wonder why we shipped back so much stuff to HQ - yes I think the quality of the no-name/own brand stuff is not so hot, but there are many people who don't read the manual and expect the stuff to plug itself in and work. The kind of customers who point satellite dishes straight East 'cos they want to watch BBC and that's from England, 'innit so the satellite must be hovering over London?( yup, had one of those). Remote controls that were 'broken' (and the batteries are still wrapped in the packing), etc. Laptops that were stated to have wireless but they weren't able to get Red FM or nuttin at all on them.......

There's even the phenomenon of folk who shop till they drop and bring it ALL back couple of days later - that way they get the buzz without having to pay the dosh - mainly women with clothing but I think some men do it too.

And some people buying technology have no respect and have zero patience - did you know the average time between opening a delivery and calling the Apple helpline (for Mac fanboys obviously) is 20 MINUTES! Can't remember where I found that statistic ....

Picked up a Fujitsu laptop meself there for 300 that a customer had returned - as there was a tiny scratch on the lid (the outside...) - worked perfectly of course.

The big brand name stuff should be perfectly OK - however I would plug in and test everything straight away, not wait till Christmas morning.

I've never seen any probs returning stuff - maybe that's changed - however don't take any sh1t - just quote "Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980" - you must be offered a cash refund if you want it - but only for faulty goods - they ARE within their rights to only offer credit if you just changed your mind about it. Certainly up until recently they made a big deal about the fact that you could return stuff on a whim, no questions asked (and many women shoppers love that so they could try stuff on at home and not feel rushed), but they may well have tightened up on this.

By the way - last year Dunnes did a 25% off everything from 6 till 9 A.M. Christmas Eve morning. Think it was via Dunnes vouchers.

    db.

Just in Dunnes at lunch - there was still 25% of loads of ladies and childrens ware stuff

Basic starting pay is €9 an hour, it goes up every year though. I actually really like working there. It sucks when you don't get out until an hour and a half after the place is closed, and personnel suck, but generally, yeah it's grand, managers are nice too.

As for 25% off, it's been extended to Sunday 16th. Btw, exchanges can NOT be done at drapery tills because the discount really messes it up. Customers won't accept I can't do them..

I returned a Savida jacket this morning btw, no questions asked, reason on the thing said 'unsuitable'. Yes you can return in any fecking Dunnes.
