Using LCD HDTV 1080p with PC

Here's a question. Seems the best forum to ask as I am sure alot of you have LCD TV's, 360's and PC's. I have a Sharp Aquos 1080p LCD TV. It supports 1080p and 720p over hdmi and only 1280x1024 max via vga/component. I want to plug the hdmi cable from my PC into this. I know the windows desktop will support 1080p. But what about games...most do not support 1080p or 720p but slightly different resolutions..1920x1200, games 1680x1050. Can an LCD TV display these resolutions (well res's below 1920x1080). I'm guessing the VESA table or whatever they are called are not setup for this on TV's so with HDMI I will get no picture or an offset picture. I know I can turn on underscan though am now sure what % it is, and can also adjust the horizontal and vertical. Anyone ?

most games that support 16:10 resolutions support 16:9 also

Last weekend I had my PC connected to the same TV with a DVI->HDMI adapter I could get 1920*1080 in UT3, 1280*720 in COD4 and 1600*900 in UT2k4

Its fun for a while but not the same as playing on a PC monitor :)

    Thanks for that info mate.

Why not as fun as a PC monitor.
Surely a nice big 37" or 52" 1080p tv beats any PC monitor if you are sitting back far enough.

It was fun! but after a few hours its lost its appeal....

Its just not the same as having the PC monitor up in yo face! :D

It would suit a game with a gamepad or driving / flight sim games, but it just doesnt feel right for FPS...

My TV is mounted above the fireplace so bending down to use keyboard / mouse and looking up at the screen broke my neck
