im in serious trouble at the moment, windows wasnt loading on my laptop so i ran a system recovery and it completly wiped all my music, movies etz but more important collage project work. i havnt used my laptop since and i was wondering if anyone knows if its possable to restore my laptop to the way it was before i ran the recovery. i really need those files and dont mind paying a bit, should i take it to my local computer store? or is there any point!

are you running windows xp? is it system restore you used or the xp recovery module? system restore isn't supposed to wipe your files at all, only roll back the os files. i have used test disk before to recover lost files, but i don't know if this will be any good in your particular situation - http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

what happened to say it wasn't loading windows at all?

Did you use one of those recovery CD's provided by the machines supplier?

ya its widows xp. windows gave no reason for not loading, just a blue screen for a second and then proceded to try and restart again, i tried safe mode and it didnt work either. i pressed F11 and started what it called a pc recovery, i checked the hp website was was under the impression this wouldnt delete my files, but i think it reinstalled windows, my laptop is now exactly the same as the day i got it. im considering using a product called recover my files http://www.recovermyfiles.com/computer-data-recovery.php
the complete format recover option seems to be what i need. any ideas?

it depends on how the recover option worked. Sounds like it runs from a hard disk partition rather than a CD. It may have formatted the main partition, or simply copied over the windows installation.

Check C:\Documents & Settings\ and see is your old user account there, if your lucky it may have just done a reinstall of XP itself and left your original User account folder alone. Highly unlikely but worth checking...
