Office Christmas Parties. Do you go?

Tis that time of year again where we'll all be invited to go and get merry with the bunches of respective idiots we work with, have a few/shedload of beers, a meal you dont really like, and then perhaps enjoy the wonder of making an arse of yourself in a nighclub while dancing like you're being electrocuted and drinking sickening sh*te like Tia Maria and Baileys.

Seeing as mine is in some scabby hotel near where I work, (with no trasnport options available, so would have to pay to stay overnight) costs €75 a head, and has no such thing as free drink, I've decided to be anti social and not go. Probably just as well anyway, as I normally just drink myself into oblivion in order to be able to succesfully make up inane conversations to have with the people beside me, so at least my liver will be pleased at this decision.

In fairness, I'm a 31 year old single bloke and 90% of my colleagues are frumpy middle aged married harpies, so I dont have too much in common with them. God knows I hear enough about recipes and noodles and how stupid men are through the day without getting it in my free time too. Were I working with a bunch of people my own age and some hot sexy ladies, I'd be there in a flash. Oh how I miss the days of working in a young sales team with many booootiful ladies and sound people that you could actually have a genuine conversation with while hiding sprouts everywhere.

So are you attending your office Crimbo party this year?

Haven't decided if I'll go to mine or not.

    But, I'll say one thing.

I hate people who spell that word with a H in it.

    Crimbo.

We are a small office so we just go to a really top restaurant for a few hours and normally head our separate ways at about 6pm. Its great because I get a free meal and booze but I don't have to hang around all night talking to 50 year old men who I have nothing in common with. I never went to them in any other job though, I just did my own thing with the people I am friendly with.

Our team party is on this Friday and I'm going and looking forward to it! We get the half day off work starting from lunch time. Most of the people in my team are oldish so I'll have to make my own fun.

I go, I'm in a small office so we just go to a nice restaurant for some lunch with wine!

Although last year was the first year we went to the pub, arrived in pub at 3pm left at 1am, oops!

Nope, I have my Judo club party, my MMA gym (mix martial arts @ www.sbgnorthside.com), mates drinks .. blahdy, blah blah. All normal people so the last thing I want to do is socialise with a bunch of soldiers.

This saturday for my one... It's in a nice hotel... but we've been using the same one for years now... so I'm a bit sick of it...

There are a lot of people in work who I get on quite well with, so it should still be fun.

Yeah, I've mine on this Thursday in Dublin. Not staying for long though as I'm in work the next day and the big one is on the following week anyway in another location !!! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Ah ours is fine. Most of the people in my department are my age +- 5 years. Generally a mediocre meal with as much wine as we can drink, and then a free bar that works out at around €50 a head.
You need to pick your seat for dinner though. There's usually a male/female split so if you end up with the girls you have to hear about holidays and babies and weddings for the whole meal and if you sit with the guys, particularly the younger ones, it's jokes about football and women. Ironically enough, sitting with management is usually the best craic.

The free bar can get messy. You need to find a good group to chat in or you just end up spending too much time at the bar being "bought" shots.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,563 ✭✭✭connundrum

Ah yeah sure why not. Our staff do's are generally great, free food and drink, youngish staff so good craic all round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,378 ✭✭✭Krieg

Always try to avoid but get dragged along anyway :(

I'm looking forward to mine. I work for a big company that owns the hotel that we're having the do at. Last year it was a 5 course meal and free drink til 6am! There were also discounted rooms if we wanted to stay, no cover charge for it and spot prizes, the best of which was a 40inch LCD tv. Oh, and apart from a handful of the women, the rest are all stunning. I love my job :D (well, I love my Christmas do).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I never miss ours, free booze. When ever we've had it in hotels I just sleep on those couches in the corridors. The staff just assume I'm too drunk to make it up to my room. The best is filling up the old ones with vodkas and red bull and watching them make an absolute tit out of themselves.

Yeah I go, usually a good laugh even if there's only a handful your own age...

Dont make the mistake a mate of mine made at one of the Christmas parties: go the pub all day before-hand, and then continue drinking and getting coked out of it during the party.

    He was a mess......

i think im a female version of you!! all the people here are bloody married and thats all they seem to talk about. they are nice enough but there are very subtle hints about you if you are single when the conversation turns to the xmas party - ive been asked about 1000's times if i am bringing some one --. So a load of drink seems like a good option - some of ours will be free so i suppose i must go and have my share!!!!!:)

    God that sounds great

Ours is the 21st December so looking forward to it....oh the free booze

    Any mad Christmas party stories?

I missed my first flight back from London after last year's Crimbo do. We'd a free bar and the Guinness was pants so I started on the JD and Red. I woke up in my hotel room with more pounds than I left the hotel room with in the first place

Then every tube was late, as was the Stanstead express.

I don't know if I'll count that as a good Crimbo do.

ah i want to work there!! sounds like a right job:D

our head office gave us 800 to go and have our crimbo party, so lots of drink, screw the meal thats just for light weights!

Is that not the norm for attending your office crimbo party??
If it's not then I've been doing something wrong for years....

Think I'll be in Thailand for mine this year, oh dear...

    Be careful.

    Getting drunk is OK, even if you're quite sloppy. Just don't be the one of the following people and it'll be fine;

    1. The person who's so drunk they keep falling down. Falling asleep is OK - provided that it's after 2am and you're sitting on a couch.
    2. The person who tells anyone (or everyone) what they think of anyone (or everyone) else in the office. Tell people you think they're great. But don't tell them what you actually think.
    3. The person who spends the whole night flirting with every vaguely attractive member of the opposite sex and/or scores one who's otherwise attached (or you're otherwise attached yourself).

    Riga...?
Make sure you check out SkyBar on top of Hotel Reval.
Unreal views of the city... whilst drinking large underpriced mixed drinks with little tiny umbrellas in them. :)

Thanks, many drinks will be had so I'll tell everyone to check this place out.

I work in a really big organisation and i'm not full time so I never get invited. It's hard for 1,300+ people to have a party together. I won't be there. (Mainly cos I'm not meant to be)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,234 ✭✭✭Malteaser!

    I usually go to mine.

It won't be till Januray though but Free bar and all that buzz plus I get on really well with most of the people I work with so it should be great fun!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

I've never worked in an office, so the answer would be no.

    This caught my attention though:

Now the chances are that your co-workers think the same of you.

If this is the case in all offices, then I never want to work in one.

I generally go for a few pints with some of my former co-workers.
None of us work together any more, but we all got on well and still keep in touch, which is nice.
