Isn't that what the website is supposed to do?!!? It's just a pity it doesn't.

For the person who wrote the article on The Simpsons..here is the meaning of the word "random" as he missused it three times in as many lines...

Most students don't understand the meaning of "random" and willfully misuse "unbelievable"

I don't know what a normal distribution is!

(it's ok though, because I know how to approximate one with a binomial distribution ;) How random is that?)

Yes, I am a nerd based in the Dept of Stats. And don't worry, this will be my only attempt at being funny. Ever.

Classic :D. If ever I'm on a bus with economists (bless the day!) I'm stealing that.

They do say that the average person's vocabulary has gone to hell in a handbasket.Maybe they should make English lessons part of BESS.

Why BESS in particular, and why not Engineering, Science, TSM (excluding English, obviously), Medicine, etc.?

I'm kinda very tired of people always associating BESS with stupidity.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that BESS has a far greater intake of students than most courses (i.e. well over 200) and so although the average BESS student may be roughly equivalent to the average e.g. history student, iteration solidifies the stereotype.

Also, in my experience, BESS students are far more literate than Engineering and Science students. You never see them in the BLU though, Degsy.

An open reply to a Mr or Mrs Degsy.

I wish to respond to your random singling out of my article, 'Why are The Simpsons so s**t these days?!!?', from University Record dated 4 December 2007, Vol. 11, Issue 3, for criticism. Your supercilious comments regarding my article, specifically my alleged misuse of one particular word, are, I would argue, ill-informed and, quite frankly, wrong. You offer, tongue lodged firmly in the side of your mouth I assume, two online definitions of said word (couldn't you have just typed in the definition from one of the dictionaries in the library where you work??). Well, Sir/ Madam, you don't need a 2.1 degree in English Literature to know the meaning of said word (having said that, possessing such a degree has undoubtedly aided in my appreciation, and, dare I say usage, of the word in question)!!!

Furthermore, I wish to rebut your assertion that I used this particular word incorrectly, and would question what random logic led you to think that I had done so. The very word which you accuse me of misusing is, you may recall, used on my part to describe Family Guy; specifically its style of humour. I would draw your attention to the episode of South Park referenced in my article, 'Cartoon Wars', and in particular the language used by Eric Cartman to describe Family Guy: he employs the exact same word, in the exact same context!!! If the genius that is Trey Parker chooses to describe Family Guy as such, I can only bow to his better judgement when it comes my assessing it.

But Degsy, this is all beside the- undeniably moot- point! I don't care if you felt I misused one silly random word! What I want to know is: what did you really think of the article??? Did it make you laugh? Did it make you cry?? Did it set your heart racing? Your loins burning?? Your mind spacing?? Your face gurning??? Answers on a postcard please.

Perhaps my only (non-judicial) crime, and one to which I readily confess, is an overuse of this word in an attempt to make a point. As a side matter, I suggest that you attempt to write further posts on this forum in a rather less perfunctory and rather more competent manner, as your constant typos and punctuation errors take away from the immense humour intrinsic to your droll musings and witty asides. As copy editor of the newspaper in question, I would be only too happy to read over your comments before you post them.

Oh, and how's the SIPTU action against Matteo going???

    Keep in touch,

    Dáire McNab

Lol. Daire, you're lucky I said I would tone it down.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 Daire McNab

Degsy: Tou, and, indeed, ché. Your answer is both the height of brevity and the pinnacle of hilarity. To suggest that my angry response came because I am 'on the rag' was nothing short of genius. I'm not though- I'm a guy.

Boston: Lady Luck has indeed cast a kind eye over my fortunes tonight; long my it continue.

To all boards.ie-ers: Isn't this supposed to be a thread about the University Record? Not one comment has dealt in any serious or constructive way with the topic issue; the first two responses were petty and- yes- random jibes, which led to an escalation of 'hilarious' insults directed at pockets of the college in general. Doesn't that say more about you all than it does about BESS students, or Engineering students, or anyone else you choose to insult? Can you have a constructive debate without resorting to slagging off other people, in an effort to forget how sad, lonely and pathetic you all really are? Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm leaving boards- forever (dry those eyes Degsy, I'll pop into you in the library someday- it's one of my priviledges as a graduate)- to hang out with some of my 43 real friends. Who live in the real world. And aren't all about the bitching.

    Keep in touch.

    xx

Aww Daire, don't go! He didn't mean it! Oh hang on, he did.

Don't take criticism so personally, I'm sure you're able to dish out plenty. In fact I've read some of your articles under a pseudonym where you weren't always too nice about people. Does handicapped people on the DART ring a bell? Daire if you're going to come on here, expect some criticism, take it with a pinch of salt and don't fret about the Internets.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

Wait, you actually counted the number of friends you have? I suggest you do go away, as I really don't like the tone of your posts about dropping in to see degsy in his place of employment.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 Daire McNab

Ok, final ever post. I have no problem with slagging people off if deserved (c.f. my previous post), but to do it in such an arch and self-serving way as people repeatedly do here is just sad.

Re: my article about handicapped people on the DART- it was satire. Satire requires one to read between the lines. The genesis of that article was an incident I witnessed at Pearse St station where ten people walked from one open carriage door to the next one so that they wouldn't have to stand beside a hanidcapped woman in a wheelchair when they got on. I was literally the only one of a huge gaggle of people who boarded through the doors that had opened in front of us. That article was satirizing the general attitude towards disability, and indeed people who are different from the perceived norm. If (big if!) you have a copy of it to hand, feel free to re-read it, and maybe re-evaluate it.

    Goodbye

ps Yes, I have 43 friends, 64 acquaintances, and 28 close relatives, some of whom could also be considered friends of sorts. And hey, I work in the students' union, I'm not looking down on him. Just referring to his complaints re: Matt the Jap article, and reiterating my capacity as a graduate to understand the meaning of the word 'random'

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

I didn't think you where looking down on him, I do think you're making some tinly veiled threat. Either way I'm sure degsy will be in hysterics.

I have no idea what the previous couple of post were about but re Degsy's comments. If the worst thing you can find in the latest edition to University Record is; in one article you believe that the word random is misused, well then fair play to all involved. Most national papers make more mistakes than that.

Irrelevant of the misuse of a word. The record has increased in standard, issue by issue, since Claire Tighe and the team this year took over. Well done to her and all involved. Hope the standard continue to increase.

You're regressing here, maybe you should have a lie down..perhaps in front of some "random" Luas(random meaning abritrary,as in not one selected by any particular criteria eg time, length, stopping place, terminus etc).
