Nokia / Fring / Three VOIP problems

I've just signed up to Three & bought a Nokia 6120c.

I wanted to sign up to a VOIP service, mainly so that I could receive calls (to an 076 number) on my mobile. (I wanted to give the 076 number out to work related people so that I didn't have to use my own personal number or carry two phones around).

I signed up for a VOIP account with freespeech.ie & I can connect to the account from a softphone on my PC without any problems.

The Nokia 6120c has an option for "SIP Settings" where I can enter my account details, which I've done. From what I've read, the 6120c doesn't have SIP fully implemented, in that while I can set up my account, there's no facility to actually use that account to dial out. That wouldn't be a big problem for me though, since I really only want to receive calls.

Problem is, the phone keeps returning a "Registration Failed" status for the account. The Nokia setup facility is fairly user unfriendly & the user manuals don't really help, but I've googled how to do it and I don't think the problem is with my settings.

As an alternative, I downloaded & tried to install Fring. According to their website, the 6120c is compatible and should work. During the installation, Fring asks me to select an access point, so I select "3", but it keeps returning an error "Could not establish connection to the Fring network" and won't let me go any further.

I can access the internet via the "3" connection (using both the built-in browser and Opera Mini, which I installed) so I don't know what the problem is.

Does anybody have any experience of this (or any solution?)

I'm interested in this also, I have an 076 number (freespeech.ie) - have used fring a lot on wifi with my n95 (skype, messenger, SIP with voipcheap.com, dialnow.com, etc), works great. I see 3 do skype now so I presumed the potential would be there for SIP to work on 3G. I would just need a three simcard, but aparantly you have to buy a phone for €99!!

I suppose the main question is do three block the IP traffic for non-skype voip? It looks like they do, it is a better business plan for them to block it.

One other thing, if you haven't seen it check out http://backsla.sh/betamax for voip rates comparison.
