    Hi Guys
I was minutes away from buying a Philips KH5960 DivX/DVD player for 80 quid (inc del) from Pixmania when in the paper this morining I spotted a Philips DVDR 3480 for 99 quid. It too has DivX playback and USB.
Is this a good player / recorder? I have no experience with DVD recorders.
Also I have SKY, is it possible to record from it?
I've trawled the net looking for info on the 3480 and theres not a lot in the way of reviews........any of you tech lords able to help??

    HB

I've also been looking for reviews for the 3480, with no luck unfortunately. It seems no one's buying Philips DVD Recorders anymore.

Where is it €99? Online or in a shop

Only a local shop, not a chain store?

Yep, just a local electronics shop.

I spotted it on Pixmania here for 73 stirling.
My only worry is in the Technical Info for the unit it states
"Photos and audio tracks can be played via USB port"
I was hoping the USB port could be used to play video also
It might be abe to but they just haven't mentioned it, or can they block the unit seeing avi files on the usb port?

If end up buying this machine, could you post a review here to let me know if it's any good.

    Cheers

Do you have a Sky Box? Having a bit of trouble tuning the satellite channels, maybe I have it connected wrong but i don't think so.
So far the player plays absolutely everything I've thrown at it.
When I get the channels sorted I reckon this will be the bargain of the century

any problems with this machine yet? Good recordings and menus?
I was looking around shops in town for this today with the best price being €130; the worst being a massive €199.99 at Tesco's which is very surprising cos they're selling them for £80 online in the UK.

    Anyway, any opinions are appreciated.

Well I have finally stopped playing with the machine long enough to write a short review.
All I can say is that if I had bought this unit for 200 quid, I'd be very happy with it.....the fact that I got it for 99 makes it one of the greatest bargins ever.
I haven't been able to find a disc it won't play.....it will just play everything.
Picture playback is crystal clear, recording is dead easy and even at the lower quality settings is very clear. USB port will allow for playing DivX/Xvid as well as pics and music. Have a 500Gb Hard Drive plugged into the USB and it plays movies from it as good as it would from a disc. (Make sure you format it to FAT 32 though)
I really can't find one fault with it......it even looks the business.
My advice would be, if you're thinking about a DVD Recorder with DivX, you would be hard pressed to find a better one than the Philips DVDR 3480. Don't let the (relatively) cheap price fool you, this is a quality, well made unit more than capable of delivering all you'll need from a player.
