Hi, i have just bought a dell inspiron 530 as a family computer. this is my first time using dell and i have to say i am pleasently surprised with what i have been given.

Firsly, this computer will mostly be used for internet access with a bit of word processing added in.

    what i got:
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E4500
    2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel Memory
500GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive

    what i didn't get:
Monitor (i already have one unused monitor in the house)
Graphics Card (easily upgradable if needed)

    what surprised me:
Memory used is Kingston (same as in xps line)
    Hard drive is this Samsung

    Total cost including shipping €450

p.s. it took a mere 47 hours to assemble this rig and get it to my door.

Anybody else here got similar experiences?

I don't know why Dell seem to have such a bad name. I have owned a few and have worked on more than I would like to think, and I find that they are a very good computer. The first PC I ever had was a Dell XPS 450 and I managed to keep that for 6 years ,only got rid of it after a power surge ,during a thunder storm took out the PSU. but it did everything I asked. DVD backups, converting video (a little slow I must admit but this is due to the age). As for quality I have a hard time knocking them as I dropped a inspiron 6000 from a height of 4 feet, and the only damage was cosmetic, all while powered on. Might not have the best looking units but seeing as the covers only seem to stay on my PC's for the first month or so that is not too much of a problem.

Only thing against a Dell is that you get exacly 1 yr warranty on all parts in the box, no matter what manufacturers warranty is, unless you pay for an extended warranty. I built a pc for a mate last weekend of similar spec & he has longer warranty on all parts:
    60 months on hd's,
    3 yrs on cpu,
    lifetime on ram,
    etc, etc.

Dell seem good value when ye go for low to mid range computers but anything towards their higher end gaming machines and they are extremely expensive. I just got a fantastic new pc from Komplett and a very similar specced machine from Dell would have cost me 650 euro more. I feel if your after a pc for all the family or a computer of reasonable power then stick with dell but any power hungry users such as gamers, 3d enthusiasts and graphic designers should look elsewhere.

another point i meant to make was that it only cost me €20 to upgrade from 320GB hdd to 500GB, not sure if there is a bit of a bug in the website of maybe because prices are based on dollars.

the other great thing about buying a dell for somebody else is that if the computer goes wrong you are not getting phone calls everyday. the user rings dell.
